CHAPTER 25

Vanessa picked up her small suitcase and looked around the luggage-pick-up terminal. She was going to meet someone and they would then drive out to Bayport. Vanessa smiled when she saw the familiar dark-colored hair and wired-rimmed glasses; she gave a shout out and wave. Phil Cohen saw her and waved back, quickening his steps. As he walked toward her, Phil looked nervously about him.

Vanessa had to smile when she saw how impeccably dressed Phil was. She was a little concerned at how nervous he seemed.

“Hi Vanessa – how was your flight?”

“Long, tiring and for some reason I feel like I’ve been time-traveling. It’s so weird – I left Japan at seven p.m. and now here I am in New York at five-thirty p.m. – two hours before I even left Japan!”

Phil laughed softly. “Yeah, it’s like one of those Sci-Fi comics Joe used to read.”

“Phil – is everything all right?” asked Vanessa when she noticed him looking around again.

“Huh? Um – yeah everything is fine – I’m just um—”

“Poopsie – poopsie where are you?!”

Phil let out a gasp and tried to duck behind Vanessa as he scanned the area.

“Phil what are you doing?!”

“Sshh – she’ll hear you!”

Vanessa was about to ask who when she heard a female voice yell for ‘Poopsie’ again. Turning her head in the direction the voice was coming from, Vanessa saw a thin, wiry redhead standing in the middle of the busy hallway. Phil was pulling Vanessa in the opposite direction, leading her away from the strange girl.  Every few seconds Phil looked over Vanessa’s shoulder.

“Phil, who was that, and why are you hiding from her – and I have to know why she’s calling you ‘Poopsie’?!”

“Her name is Maisy Cross! And for some odd reason she thinks I’m her boyfriend – all because I accompanied her to a lecture!” Phil sighed.

Gently patting Phil on the back, Vanessa choked out a “Poor Phil,” before being overcome with laughter.

The drive back to Bayport started out lively, with Phil telling Vanessa about meeting Maisy. It started when his roommate had wanted to date this very pretty girl but she wouldn’t go out with him unless he found a date for her roommate! Maisy and her roommate were Literature majors – a prominent writer was giving a lecture and the two girls had wanted to attend.

“And since Ron and Amy are dating – Maisy thought we should be an item too!”

Phil shot Vanessa a sidelong glance as she giggled during his tale.

“I’m sorry Phil, but you have to admit it is pretty funny!”

The corner of Phil’s mouth twitched. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

The next ten minutes, the only sounds came from the radio. Vanessa stared out the window.

“I bet you’re excited to see Joe again! Why didn’t he pick you up?”

“He – uh – he doesn’t know I’m here. I haven’t spoken to Joe in a long, long time. Anyway, he’s seeing someone else now.”

“Are you sure?”

Taking out the email from her purse, Vanessa unfolded it and passed it over to Phil.

“Callie sent that to me – this is his new girlfriend.”

Phil quickly glanced at the paper; he recognized the picture – Callie had sent him the same one. A puzzled frown creased his forehead; Frank had told Phil about Rayne but never mentioned that she and Joe were an item. He wanted to reassure Vanessa but thought it would be best to speak with Frank first.

“So, why haven’t you heard from Joe?”

Vanessa shrugged at first. “I don’t know – I didn’t realize how hard the classes would be! I got so busy studying and it was so overwhelming being on my own!”

“Yeah, and I’m sure Joe got pretty busy with testifying against Daniel Reese.”

“Joe and Frank were on a case?”

“You didn’t – that’s how Joe met Rayne.”

“Wait – wait…did you say Daniel Reese?! Didn’t Joe and Frank help put him in jail?”

“One and the same – seems he was being transferred to another prison and escaped. He kidnapped Joe and Rayne and held them hostage for a day – he also tried to frame Frank for rape.”

“Was he hurt?” whispered Vanessa.

“No – at least I don’t think so.”

Vanessa crumpled up the paper in her hand; she turned her head and stared out the window. She didn’t want Phil to see her tears. Why hadn’t Joe told her? Vanessa felt that she really had lost Joe.

Several days had gone by since Vanessa and Phil had returned home for Christmas. Joe was becoming disheartened, as he had yet to see Vanessa. He knew that she had visited with Callie and several of their other friends. Even Frank had bumped into her at the mall...but she hadn’t contacted Joe. The few times that Joe had called the Bender home, Vanessa always seemed to be out.

Noticing how sad Joe had become, Frank wanted to do something to cheer him up. Their best friend, Chet Morton had called Frank to let him know that it was safe to ice skate on the pond, and had invited the gang over for a skating party. He wasn’t sure if he could convince Joe to go along, so Frank called in some reinforcements!

“Frank, I told you already – I don’t feel like ice skating! Besides, you know I was never too keen on skating! I only did it because Iola and then Vanessa liked it.”

“Then what about sledding? Chet said there’s plenty of snow on the hill to go sledding!” Frank coaxed.

“Mom, tell Frank to leave me alone!” Joe whined as he entered the kitchen.

Laura Hardy looked up from her task; she and Aunt Gertrude were busy in the kitchen baking cookies. She gave Frank a questioning look.

“I’m just trying to get him out of his room and go out and have some fun! Chet is having an ice skating party and I was suggesting to Joe if he didn’t want to skate he could go sledding!”

“You really should have some fun, Joe.” Laura told her youngest as she watched him swipe a few cookies.

“Your mother’s right – you’ve moped long enough! Time to go out and get some fresh air!” Aunt Gertrude put in her two cents.

While Frank was busy convincing Joe…Callie was doing her best to get Vanessa to go, as well.

“Come on Van, you used to love skating out at the pond!”

“I know, but – what if Joe is there!? I haven’t exactly been very – friendly towards him.”

“Then now is the time to make amends! Talk to him – explain why you stopped writing to him.”

“You’re right – I know he’s called the house a few times. Maybe that’s what he was trying to do.”

“There you are! Now hurry and find something warm to wear!”

Vanessa laughed as Callie pulled her off the bed.
