Joe scowled; he knew that his family meant well and only wanted him to be happy. But that didn’t mean he had to like it. He didn’t say anything as he took his cookies and started to leave the room. Laura nudged Frank to follow him. “Joe…” “Frank I know you mean well, but all I want to do is veg out in front of the TV.” Halfway into the living room Joe changed directions when the front doorbell rang, and went to see who was at the door. “Hi Joe – Tony is taking me ice skating; are you coming too?” “Hi Tony – Hi Rayne, come on in.” Joe said with a sigh. “So, did Frank tell you to come here?” Rayne and Tony followed Joe inside; the couple looked at each other and knew they were going to have to work hard to convince Joe to come out with them. “Nooo,” replied Rayne, “Tony was telling me about the Morton pond and how you used to go out and ice skate there. I’ve skated in ice rinks before but never on a pond! I thought it would be fun!” Joe couldn’t help but smile at Rayne’s childlike excitement; he glanced over at Tony and saw that he had a huge grin on his face. “She’s really irresistible, isn’t she?” chuckled Tony. Clasping Joe’s hand in hers, Rayne jumped up and down. “Come with us, Joe – say you’ll come with us – please!!” “Okay, but only if you quit squishing my cookies!!” “Oops – sorry,” she giggled. Joe went upstairs to dress a little more warmly and grab his ice skates and sled. ***** Chet stood on the front porch to greet everyone as they drove up to the house. He was happy to finally meet Rayne; he had left Bayport to study at Colorado State. Rayne didn’t know what she wanted to do first, ice skate…sled…or build a snowman! As the group walked towards the pond, Joe helped solve her problem. Chet was giving Rayne the grand tour as he led her and Tony over to the pond. Frank and Joe were walking a few steps behind them. Joe paused and scooped up a handful of snow. He placed his finger over his lips to tell Frank to keep quiet. Thinking that his brother was going to hit Chet with the snowball, Frank chuckled softly as he shook his head. He had wondered who would start the Snowball Wars first. Joe truly had intended to hit Chet but then a wicked grin crossed his face and he changed his intended target. The snowball hit Rayne in the middle of her back. It hit her so hard that she stumbled a few steps forward. Joe couldn’t help himself and started to laugh. “Rayne,” he choked, “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to throw it that hard!” Standing up straight, Rayne slowly turned around to face Joe. She wagged her finger at him as she glared sternly at him. “You’re going to pay for that, Hardy!!” “Them’s fightin’ words, Preston!” Joe smirked. Suddenly a snowball smashed into the back of Joe’s head; he let out a yelp and turned to see Frank smiling at him. “The agony – betrayed by my own brother!” Joe exclaimed with exaggerated sadness. Three more snowballs came flying at Joe. Letting out a battle cry the younger Hardy scooped up more snow. He made a wild throw as he turned to tackle Frank.
Callie and Vanessa drove up to the Morton farm. As they got out of the car they could hear shouting and laughter. Hearing a car, Mrs. Morton came to the door to see who had arrived. She smiled at the two young women. “Hello Callie – Vanessa, it’s nice to see you again.” Mrs. Morton said as she held the door open. “I just made some coffee – would you like to have some before you go out there?” Declining the offer, Callie and Vanessa went out the back to meet up with their friends. Anxious to see Joe, Vanessa hurried her steps and was soon walking ahead of Callie. She was just rounding the corner of the back of the barn….Vanessa froze when she saw Joe with a pretty girl in his arms. Recognizing her from the picture Callie had e-mailed, she knew the young woman was Rayne. Vanessa quickly turned around and bumped into Callie. “Sorry, Cal!” “Are you okay?” “Oh yeah – I just, um – I left my gloves on the kitchen table and it looks like the snow wars are going strong. And if I’m going to be making snowballs – I have to keep the hands warm! I’ll be right back!” Before Callie could say anything, Vanessa was already heading back to the house.
The first five minutes of the snow fight, Rayne stood off to the side laughing at the young men’s antics. Joe finally noticed her standing away from the mêlée. Ducking an oncoming snowball that Chet threw, Joe ran over to Rayne. Grabbing her around the waist, he swung her around. “You’re not going to get away this easily!” Joe told a laughing and screaming Rayne. Tony heard Rayne’s scream and saw that Joe had hold of her. He ran over to help. No one noticed Vanessa as she stepped into the open. Because she had turned to leave so quickly, Vanessa didn’t see or hear Tony as he came to Rayne’s rescue. Frank happened to look up and saw Callie; he smiled and waved at her. He jogged over to her and pulled her into a hug. “I’m glad you made it,” he said with a kiss. “I would have been here sooner but it took me awhile to convince Vanessa to come.” “Vanessa is here?” asked Joe as he came up to greet Callie. “Yes, she went back to the house. She said she forgot her gloves.” Joe stood still for a minute; making up his mind, he gave Frank and Callie a small smile. “I think I’ll go see her – thanks for telling me, Callie.” With steely determination, Joe left to confront Vanessa. His heart was pounding in his chest. He was nervous and excited at the same time. Joe wanted to let her know that he understood why the e-mails had slowly filtered to a stop. He had found Bayport University to be fun and challenging, some of his classes had overwhelmed him. Joe could only imagine how overwhelmed Vanessa had been, plus being in another country! Vanessa sat in the kitchen, holding a cup of hot cocoa. Mrs. Morton was preparing some snacks. Her attempts at a conversation with the young woman faltered. Sensing that Vanessa needed to think, Mrs. Morton kept quiet. Vanessa heard the back door open; thinking that it was Callie she turned around to let her friend know that she was fine. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw Joe standing in the doorway. His cheeks were flushed pink from the cold – his hair was a tousled mess and his eyes sparkled brightly at her. Suddenly remembering she had something to do, Mrs. Morton quietly left the kitchen. Shutting the door as he entered the room, Joe tentatively walked over to her. “It’s good to see you again – you look good,” he said shyly. “Thank you – you really look good yourself.” An uncomfortable silence fell between them. Vanessa rose from her chair and took her mug over to the sink. She poured the rest of the cocoa down the drain and rinsed out the mug. “I’m sorry….” Vanessa and Joe had spoken at the same time. Vanessa let out a giggle. “Ladies first,” said Joe. “I wanted to apologize for not e-mailing you as often as I wanted. It’s just that things…” “I know – I think we both got really busy!” Vanessa gave Joe a slight nod, and then a sad expression crossed her face. “Why didn’t you tell me about – about that madman escaping from jail and…and being captured by him?” “I didn’t – I didn’t see any reason to. You were so far away and he didn’t hurt me too badly – there wasn’t anything you could have done. And I didn’t want to worry you.” “I guess I can understand that.” Moving away from the sink, Vanessa stood in the middle of the doorway leading to the living room. Wanting to show Vanessa that he still cared for her, Joe walked over to her, a small smile on his face. When he reached her, Joe kissed her lightly on her cheek. Seeing her surprised expression, he pointed upward. Hanging up above was some mistletoe. “You’re standing under the mistletoe – I had to kiss you.” “You didn’t have to kiss me!” “Sure I did – it’s a law! You wouldn’t want me breaking the law, now would you?” The corners of Vanessa’s mouth twitched as she tried not to smile. “If that’s the case – you’re standing under the mistletoe. Doesn’t that mean I have to kiss you?” “Oh, most definitely!” Joe turned his head so that Vanessa could kiss his cheek. As Vanessa moved to do so, Joe moved his head again. Caught by surprise, she pulled back for a second. Then she felt Joe’s arms around her waist and Vanessa soon lost herself in his kiss.
Joe never wanted the kiss to end. He had the woman he loved in his arms and he never wanted to let her go. Vanessa thought of Rayne and pulled back. She felt terrible – how could she do this? “I’m sorry Joe – that shouldn’t…” “What’s wrong?” “Rayne – what about Rayne?” Seeing the puzzled frown on Joe’s face made Vanessa a little angry. “Joe, I know you and Rayne are seeing each other! Don’t you think you’re being a – a jerk, kissing me like that?!” “What makes you think Rayne and I – we’re just friends! Rayne is with Tony – not me!” “But – but – Callie….In the picture Callie e-mailed me it looked like – and then I saw you and Rayne – you were holding her in your arms!” Joe wanted to laugh but thought it would be best not to. “Van – I was trying to dump her in the snow! You must have left pretty quick, otherwise you would have seen Tony coming to her rescue!” “So you aren’t seeing anyone?” “No – are you?” With a shake of her head, Vanessa laced her fingers around Joe’s neck and kissed him again. Joe wanted to ask Vanessa about Japan and the University. But as the kiss intensified, he somehow knew that Vanessa wasn’t going back.
Tony and Rayne were going to get warm; they went in search of something hot to drink. They stood outside when they saw Joe and Vanessa kissing. Not wanting to disturb them, Tony and Rayne stepped back. “I wonder if this means Vanessa is back to stay?” Tony wondered out loud. “I don’t have to use my physic abilities to say – I don’t think she’ll be leaving Joe anytime soon.” As Tony took another peek, he knew that Rayne was right.
