CHAPTER 20

Water…She was in the water…she could feel its icy coldness…Her lungs were burning…Air, she needed air…she tried to swim but her limbs wouldn’t obey her commands…then he came…he always showed up…she didn’t know how she knew this was a he… all she ever saw was wavy blonde hair and blue eyes…It was the eyes that haunted her…the bluest eyes she had ever seen…the color of sapphires…then she felt arms around her…lifting her up to the surface…but the blue eyes were steadily going down…she reached out…trying to save him…but still her limbs wouldn’t obey…

Gasping for air, Rayne sat up in bed. Her body was shaking, her skin felt clammy. She could feel goose bumps on her arms. Taking huge gulps of air, Rayne tried to slow her breathing. There was a tap on her door, and then her mother was by her side.

“Was it the precognitive dream again?”

Rayne could only nod her head in the affirmative as she clung to her mother.

“It’s…it’s coming more frequently now…ever since we’ve moved here to Bayport…He’s here, Mom…I know he is!” Rayne pulled back to look at her mother. “He’s in danger…and I don’t know how I can help him!”

Emma, Rayne’s mother tried to smooth down her daughter’s mussed curls. She gazed into her eyes and sighed softly. She sometimes wished that Rayne hadn’t inherited her grandmother’s gift.

“You can’t worry yourself sick about it, honey. We’ve spoken about this before…you are going to “see” a lot of things…You can’t save everyone whose life may be in danger.”

“I know Mom, but…I can’t help but feel that he’s special…that he’s not meant to die.”

Frank jogged down the familiar path; he loved these quiet mornings. If he and Joe were on a case, this would be the time that Frank would reflect on what they had pieced together. Normally, Frank was alone on these early morning runs, but for the past month Joe had been with him. Ever since Vanessa had left….

Frank glanced over at his younger brother, although Joe had kept telling him he was fine – Frank knew better. Who would have thought that Vanessa Bender would move to Japan

It had all started when Vanessa had won a summer scholarship to study abroad. She had chosen Todei University in Japan. One day a major computer graphics company was touring the university, and Vanessa’s professor had proudly shown her work to the visitor. He had been so impressed that he offered Vanessa a full scholarship to stay and study in Japan; once she graduated she would then work for them.

Vanessa had wanted to talk it over with her mother and Joe first. Joe, of course, was not enthusiastic about the idea but he also didn’t want to hold Vanessa back. He had reluctantly given his blessing; one month later Vanessa was gone.

Joe could sense Frank watching him as they ran; he let out an exasperated sigh.

“Frank, stop doing that.”

“Stop doing what – I’m just…out running with my favorite brother!”

Joe let out a snort; he slowed down to what he liked to call a “slog” ( a slow jog).

“Stop studying me like I’m some kind of science specimen. I’m fine, Frank!”

“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to make you feel like you were under a microscope. I just worry about you…”

“I know – and I’ll admit that yes, I do miss Vanessa – I know it may take awhile for me to stop missing her, but…I couldn’t not let her go. It was a chance in a lifetime for her!”

Although Joe had stopped speaking, Frank knew that his brother had more to say. He waited patiently for Joe to continue.

“Did you know that Van said she would stay? All I had to d was tell her to stay and she would have.”

“Why didn’t you? I know you wanted to.”

“Yeah, I did but…I didn’t want her to resent me later on. I didn’t want her to have any ‘what ifs’…what if I hadn’t stayed…what if I had followed my dream’…do you understand?”

“Yes I do and I’m really proud of you, Joe. That took a lot of courage.”

Joe just shrugged, and then a slow smile crossed his face.

“We’re just a couple of blocks away from home…Last one to the house has to wash the breakfast dishes!”

Before Frank had a chance to respond, Joe was off and running.

“Hey – Joe, you brat!”

“Here’s one more cup for you to clean, big brother!” Joe smiled sweetly as he placed the cup in the sink.

“I should make you wash these dishes, technically you cheated!” Frank growled.

Laura Hardy laughed softly as she watched her two grown sons bicker.

“Really boys, you act as if you’re both still nine and ten years old!”

“Well, he did cheat, mom!” Frank continued to grumble.

Laura looked over at Joe, who was giving her his best wide-eyed innocent expression, as if to say he didn’t know what Frank was talking about. This only caused Laura to laugh even more.

“What’s so funny?” asked Fenton Hardy.

“Oh nothing, just the Lost Boys up to their usual routine.”
