THE CHAPTERS |
As Frank was coming out of his Criminal Justice class, he saw Con Riley standing out in the hall. From the glum expression on Con’s face and the presence of the uniformed police officer by his side. Frank knew he wasn’t going to like what was going to happen next. “Hi Con – what brings you here?” The officer took a step towards Frank; Con held him back. “I told you that I would handle this.” “What’s going on, Con?” Frank glanced warily at the officer. The man looked a little too gung-ho for his liking. He didn’t like the way the officer kept touching his revolver. “Frank, I have to take you in for questioning.” Con said softly. “Okay – can you tell me what the charge is?” A small crowd was starting to form around the three men, Con turned to the officer. “Don’t just stand there – get these people to move!” The officer glared at Frank and hesitated for a moment before he started getting the students to move on. Con moved closer to Frank. “Frank, not here. I’ll tell you on the way to the station.” “All right Con – just keep ‘Dirty Harry’ in check!” Con chuckled softly as he led Frank to the police cruiser. Leaning against a tree, Daniel lit his cigarette as he watched Frank being taken in. He laughed softly to himself; they must have found the girl, he thought. He stepped away from the tree – he had a lot of work to do. Daniel Reese wasn’t the only person to see Frank being escorted off campus by the police. Tony Prito and Callie Shaw happened to bump into each other and had been chatting before their next class. Tony was the first to see Frank walking next to Con Riley. “I wonder what that’s all about!” Tony pointed out the trio to Callie. “I don’t know but it looks like Frank is being arrested!” “No way, Callie. Maybe Con just needs Frank’s help.” “If that were true he would have come alone and not have an armed officer with him! Just look at that guy – he looks like he wants to shoot Frank on the spot!” Tony and Callie started to walk over to Frank and Con. As they got closer the uniformed officer held out his hand while taking out his revolver. “Stop right there!” Tony held Callie back and held up both hands. “Whoa – easy there, cowboy!” “Officer Tyler!” Con roared angrily. “Put that weapon away!” “How do you know they aren’t trying to help him escape?!” Officer Tyler protested as he reluctantly put his gun back into the holster. Con went over to Officer Tyler and stood nose to nose with him. “First of all, Frank Hardy isn’t under arrest! He’s coming in for questioning! In the second place, it’s not our place to judge anyone!” “Callie, would you find Joe and let him know where I’m at? And call my parents.” “Sure thing, Frank. And I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Callie gave Frank a quick kiss, then Con led him away to the car. Tony put his arm around her shoulder. “Everything will be okay, Callie.” “I hope so but I have a really bad feeling about this.” Callie let out a sigh. “Come on, let’s go find Joe.” ***** When they arrived at the police station, Frank was led to an interrogation room. Chief Collig was waiting for him; Frank greeted the Chief of Police. “Would you like something to drink, Frank?” “No thank you – what I’d like is to know why I was brought here.” Chief Collig bit back a smile as he stared at Frank’s stubborn expression. “All right – this afternoon one of the missing girls was found, one Lindsey Underlay. She was found in Cooper Woods – hidden in one of the trails. One of the park rangers found her – she had been badly beaten and raped – just before she lost consciousness she named you as the culprit.” As Frank sat and listened to what the Chief was saying he thought about what Rayne had said that morning. His heart began to beat rapidly; Frank pushed his chair back and jumped up. “We have to find Joe! We have to find him now!”
Joe’s stomach rumbled as he left his Calculus class. He left the Science building, walking down the campus towards the cafeteria. “Are you Joe Hardy?” “Wow, what are they feeding you guys at the academy!” Joe took in the tall, muscled man in front of him. Taking off his hat, the man brushed back his brown hair as he smiled at Joe. “You are Joe Hardy?” “Yes I am – what can I do for you, officer? Are you new to the force – my brother and I know most of the officers.” “I’m new to Bayport – I transferred here from Southport. I’m Officer Wilson – I’m here take you to your brother, Frank.” “Frank’s at the station? Did something happen to him?” asked Joe with some concern. “He’s fine – I believe there was a lead in the Daniel Reese case.” “ A lead – that’s great! Lead the way!” “Follow me; my car is just around the corner.” Joe walked a few steps ahead of the officer. As he turned the corner he stopped when he didn’t see a police cruiser. “Hey, I thought you said…” Joe felt a sharp pain in the back of his head – his knees buckled as he fell to the ground. Daniel looked around to make sure no one saw him as he dumped Joe in the car trunk. He quickly duct taped Joe’s mouth shut and then wrapped more tape around his wrists and ankles. Closing the trunk, Daniel walked around the car to the driver’s side. His hand was on the door handle…. “Excuse me, officer – I seem to have locked myself out of my car…” “Call a tow truck, then.” “My cell phone battery is dead – would you mind—” Rayne placed her hand on the officer’s arm. She suddenly felt dizzy and had a sudden vision of dark eyes and a scar. She looked up at the officer. “It’s you!” she gasped with fright. Daniel took hold of Rayne’s arm and held it tight. Before she could scream for help, he hit her hard across the face. As Rayne lost consciousness she could feel the icy cold water.
