THE CHAPTERS |
Emma Preston drove into the visitor parking lot at Bayport University. Wednesdays were her husband’s long day. She was there to bring him some dinner. Emma was also hoping that Rayne was still at the university. She was worried about her daughter, Rayne hadn’t come home. Emma was hoping that Rayne had stayed to keep Michael company. As she walked over to the administration building where Michael’s office was located, Emma noticed Rayne’s car was still in the parking lot. She breathed a small sigh of relief. Rayne was still at the university, she probably forgot to call home. Emma smoothed her blonde hair away from her face as she went up the steps leading into the building. She found Michael’s office and knocked on the door. “It’s open – come on in.”
Michael Preston looked up, and his breath caught in his throat when he saw his wife at the door. Her blonde beauty always took his breath away. He always thought that she looked so regal. Emma smiled over at him. “I brought you some dinner. Where is Rayne – is she still here?” A puzzled expression crossed his face. “Rayne left for home hours ago – why would you think she was still here?” “She – she never came home and – and her car is still in the parking lot.” Emma replied, her voice a whisper. “Are you sure?” “I know my daughter’s car!” Michael got up from his seat and went over to his wife; he placed his hands on her shoulders. “Try not to worry; I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation.” “Like what?” Michael racked his brain for an explanation when he suddenly remembered a name. “Hardy – she’s probably with Joe Hardy!” Michael went back to his desk, and searched for his student file. Emma slowly approached her husband’s desk, a puzzled expression on her face. “Found it! Let me give him a call.” “Who is Joe Hardy?” “A young man in my class – he’s also in Rayne’s Forensics class. She met him a couple of days ago.” Taking out his cell phone, Michael dialed the Hardy residence.
Frank was getting ready to leave to meet Chief Collig and Fenton at the police station when the phone rang. He stood in the hallway for a few seconds debating answering it. Thinking that the caller could be Daniel, Frank picked up the phone. “Hello, Hardy residence.” “May I speak to Joe Hardy please?” “He can’t come to the phone – may I help you? I’m his brother Frank.” “My name is Michael Preston, I’m a professor from Bayport University; I teach one of your brother’s classes. I’m really looking for my daughter Rayne – I was hoping that she was with Joe.” Frank suddenly felt ill. “Your daughter is missing?” he gasped. Hearing the fear in Frank’s voice, Michael tightened his hold on the phone. “She didn’t come home and my wife saw her car still parked in the student parking lot – Frank, is something wrong?” “Mr. Preston – I don’t know how to tell you this….” Frank quickly began to tell Mr. Preston about Rayne’s dream and how she sensed that not only Joe but she was in danger as well. “Oh my God! Are you trying to tell me that madman may have my daughter?!” “I’m afraid so – I’m so sorry, Mr. Preston. I’m on my way to meet with Chief Collig and my father at the police station. Do you know where the building is?” “Yes, I’ve seen it driving to the university. We’ll be right over.” ***** Daniel left the bedroom, deciding to give Joe and Rayne some time alone. He wanted to let Joe wonder what was going to happen next. Right now he was hungry. Daniel got into the car and headed into town for some burgers and maybe a little fun. As he drove to the Burger Barn, Daniel let his mind wander – he thought about the wonderful tormenting things he was going to do to Joe – the fun he would soon have with Rayne. As he thought about the young girl, Daniel smiled. He thought he might keep this one for awhile. With her soft caramel-colored skin – her cornflower-blue eyes and soft, curly hair. Yes, thought Daniel – he would keep her around – at least until he grew tired of her. His smile grew – and he would definitely let Joe know exactly what he was going to do just before he killed the blonde detective!
As Daniel was driving into the Burger Barn drive-thru, Officer Tyler was finding out about a stolen car. The Bayport police officer, along with Callie and Tony, had been stopping students and questioning them about seeing Joe. A young man came running up to them, his light brown hair hung past his shoulders. He pushed back his wire-rimmed glasses when he came to a stop in front of the small group. “Excuse me, officer – my car has been stolen!” Officer Tyler pulled out a business card and handed it to the young man. “Call the station and report it – I don’t have time to get the information.” “What do you mean you don’t have time – it was one of you guys who took it?!” Callie grabbed hold of the young man’s collar. “It was a police officer who took your car – what did he look like – was there another guy with him – tall, blonde hair?!” Seeing that Callie was making the young man nervous, Tony patted his back as he stared at the blonde girl. “Easy Callie, he isn’t the bad guy. Hi, my name is Tony – and this so-called police officer who took your car – well, he isn’t really a cop. We believe he kidnapped our friend – which is why the little lady is a bit tense.” Callie glared at Tony, who gave her a smile. “If you could describe the guy for Officer Tyler here and for my friend – you would really help us and the police can find your car too.” Looking nervously at Callie who had backed away a few steps, the young man gave Tony a slight nod. “Okay, Tony. I’m Keith Carter. I got a fairly good look at the guy. I didn’t see your friend but I did see him dump something or someone in the trunk of the car before he left.”
