THE CHAPTERS |
Officer Tyler thought it would be best to take Keith Carter to the police station. This way the young man could give a description of the faux Bayport police officer to the sketch artist. He took the three college students back to the station. Callie, Tony and Keith were seated up by the front desk. Callie glanced over at the door when she noticed an older couple walk in. The man towered over the woman; he seemed nervous as he wiped away the perspiration that glistened on his forehead. His skin made Callie think of dark chocolates. She turned her attention to the woman, who was several inches shorter than the man. Her golden blonde hair was pulled back into a French twist. There was something about her eyes and the way she carried herself that reminded Callie of someone she knew. Officer Tyler came up to Keith; he was followed by a female officer. “Keith, this is Officer Myers, she’s our sketch artist.” “Hi, Keith – if you’ll follow me over to my desk we can get started.” Giving the petite officer a wan smile, Keith glanced over at Callie and then Tony. They gave him a reassuring smile as he slowly stood up. “Um – Officer Myers – is it all right if my friends come too?” Tony’s eyebrows shot up as he looked over at Callie. Officer Myers smiled and assented to his request. With a shrug of her shoulders, Callie followed Keith and Officer Myers. “Excuse me; I’m looking for Frank Hardy.” Hearing Frank’s name, Callie paused and turned around to find the couple who had walked in speaking with the desk sergeant. Turning to see that Tony was still with Keith, Callie approached the desk. “Hardy? We don’t have an officer by that name,” replied the desk sergeant. “No – I don’t believe he is a police officer – at least I don’t think so.” Callie wondered why this man was searching for Frank when the older Hardy walked in; Fenton was one step behind him. “Frank – Mr. Hardy!” Callie greeted the two men. Rayne’s father turned around and held out his hand in greeting. “Frank, I’m Michael Preston – we spoke earlier.” “Hello, Mr. Preston – this is my father, Fenton Hardy.” “Hello,” greeted Fenton. “I’m sorry we had to meet under these circumstances.” “Have you heard any news about Joe and Rayne?” asked Michael. Callie stepped up then: “A witness was found, he’s giving the sketch artist a description right now.” Taking Frank’s hand, she led the group towards Officer Myers desk. Keith was looking at one of Officer Myers’ attempts. “No, he looked a little – a little like that guy!” Keith stood up as he pointed straight at Frank. Frank came to a stop, shock registering on his face. Keith stared at him a bit longer and then shook his head. “Not exactly like the guy but close – at first glance I could swear. But the other guy, his hair is not as dark…a cross between my hair color and his – and the other guy is more buff – like a weightlifter – plus the other guy looked really tall. I mean – it seemed like he was.” Chief Collig had been listening to what Keith had said. “No wonder you were accused of kidnapping those girls. Reese has disguised himself to look like Frank.” ***** Daniel had gotten his food to go; he headed back to the cabin.
Joe was still seething, he had never wanted to kill someone so much in his life – not since…Iola. Rayne was still shivering with fright from Daniel’s touch. She was also concerned about Joe – she had seen the rage on his face as Daniel caressed her arm. Rayne watched as Joe tried to free his hands from the duct tape. “Joe,” she whispered softly. Joe stared down at the floor; he slowly raised his eyes to look at Rayne. “I’m sorry – if there was any way – I would have stopped him!” “Joe – how can you blame yourself for what he did?! He tied you up – he knew how upsetting this would be for you! I could feel his – glee, if you will! He was enjoying what he did! You have nothing to apologize for!” Joe looked away. “Maybe,” he finally replied but the tone in his voice made Rayne think that he didn’t believe her. “He’s the person I dreamt about – the one with the scar. He’s covered it – I could see that he was wearing make-up and I think he has contacts on.” “No wonder I didn’t recognize him! He really fooled me!” Joe growled in frustration. Rayne glanced over at Joe in fright when they heard a door slam shut. “Honey, I’m home!” Daniel laughed uproariously as he walked into the bedroom. “Hardy – you still here?!” He let out another guff of laughter. Daniel stood over Joe who was glaring at his captor. Leaning down, Reese grabbed hold of Joe’s arm and lifted him. Throwing Joe over his shoulder, Daniel turned to smile at Rayne. “Joe and I need to speak privately – I’ll be back later.” He gave Rayne a wink as he shut the door. Joe tried to wiggle off Daniel’s shoulder but the man had a firm grip. The young Hardy soon found himself dropped unceremoniously down onto the floor. He grimaced in pain as he watched Daniel walk over to a chair. Joe noticed a can of beer on the floor; he heard the rustle of a paper bag. Joe’s mouth began to water when he smelled the food. “Mmm – this place makes the best burgers!” Daniel chewed slowly, a feral smile on his face.
