CHAPTER 20

As Daniel drove into Bayport, he noticed that the car was low on gas. He pulled into a gas station that had a full service pump, and told the attendant to “fill her up”! Watching the young attendant through the side-view mirror, Daniel knew he had to time this just right. The attendant turned off the gas pump….Just as he was putting the nozzle back, Daniel revved up the engine and hit the gas pedal. He sped away, laughing as he watched the attendant run after the car.

“Hey Carl!”

“Yeah, what’s up Tom?”

“Some guy stiffed us for a full tank of gas – don’t worry, I got the license plate number.”

“How many times do I have to tell you – make them give you at least twenty bucks before you turn on the pump!”

“I told you, I got the license!”

Carl walked out of the garage, wiping his hands with a rag. “Well at least you did something right. Think your friend at the police department will look up the plate number so we can get his address?”

“I keep telling you, he’s not my friend – he’s my cousin! His shift should have started – let me give him a call. But I don’t know how soon he’ll get back to us.”

“What do you mean? Ah man – do I have to pay him or something?”

“No – it’s just – well I was talking with him last night and he was bragging about how he was on some big case. My cousin is kind of full of himself – know what I mean?”

Carl rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. My sister’s husband is like that! Give him a call and see what he says.”

Frank was helping Laura finish up cleaning the breakfast dishes; Fenton was putting away the clean dishes when the doorbell rang. Laura looked over at Fenton with a mixture of dread and hope shining in her eyes.

“Could it be Ezra with some news?” she asked.

“Do you want me to see who it is, Dad?”

“I got it, Frank,” replied Fenton as he gave Laura’s hand a reassuring squeeze.

Opening the front door, Fenton was surprised to find the Prestons standing on the doorstep. Opening the door further, he stepped aside.

“Mr. and Mrs. Preston, please come in.”

Letting his wife go in first, Michael smiled his thanks to Fenton.

“Thank you, Mr. Hardy, please call me Michael. Emma and I were hoping you had some news about Joe and Rayne.”

“And call me Fenton – we haven’t heard anything. In fact, Frank and I were going over to see Chief Collig.”

“Mr. Har – Fenton, would you mind if I joined you? It will only take me a few minutes to take my wife back home…”

“Why don’t you let your wife stay here? I could use the company.”  Laura had come out of the kitchen; she smiled over at Emma Preston.

“Thank you, Mrs. Hardy.” Emma gave her a relieved smile.

“Laura – please call me Laura. And you would be doing me a great favor by staying.”

Giving their wives a kiss goodbye, Michael left with Fenton and Frank. Hope was running high.

Officer Jonathan Tyler strutted into the police station; he normally would be walking down Main Street writing out tickets or directing traffic. Yesterday he had been running late at the time that Con Riley had been asked to pick up Frank Hardy. He had been more than happy to accompany Sgt. Riley.

Jonathan was a bit annoyed when his cell phone rang and saw his cousin’s name on the Caller ID.

“Tom, I know what you’re going to ask and I don’t have time to look up a license plate for you.”

“Come on, Jon! The guy stiffed me for a full tank, and Carl is going to make me pay the twenty-five bucks!”

“I don’t have anything to write on.”

“No problem, it’s a real easy plate to remember: Cupcake!”

Jonathan slowly sank down on a nearby chair. “What did you say?”

“Yeah I know,” chuckled Tom. “This guy’s plate said ‘Cupcake’!”

“Tom, this is very important – can you describe the guy?”

“He stayed in the car so I don’t know how tall he is – his hair was brown – it went past his collar.”

“Did you see which way he was headed?”

“He was speeding towards the city limits.”

“Tell Carl not to worry about the tank of gas – I’ll call you later!”

Snapping his cell phone shut, the young officer jumped out of the chair and ran for Chief Collig’s office.

Daniel dug into his pockets and frowned; that kid didn’t have much money on him and he didn’t think to check Joe’s wallet. His “friends” had given him a limited amount of cash; he had about five dollars left from that. The teenaged boy only had three dollars in his pocket. Not enough for a really good breakfast. Daniel shrugged; he’d just do what he did at the gas station. He had been at this diner before and knew there was a window in the Men’s room.

Getting out of the car Daniel went inside the diner. He smiled at the waitress as he found a seat in the back. Today was going to be a good day. First a nice hot breakfast and then some fun with his “guests”.
