THE CHAPTERS |
Sally had been a waitress for over ten years so she wasn’t surprised when the man she had served breakfast to had left without paying. He had been nice the other times he had come by. The last time he had been a little short on cash, so when he kept asking for more coffee Sally had a feeling he was going to skip out. She cleared off the table and then let the manager know what happened.
Daniel stretched when he got out of the car; he slammed the door shut and walked into the cabin. He glanced over at Joe, noticing that the young Hardy was now awake. Before the fun started, he needed to get cleaned up. Walking into the bathroom, Daniel washed the makeup off his face. He stared at his reflection in the mirror; he reached up and traced down along his finger with his forefinger. “Time for some fun, Hardy!”
Joe heard Daniel arrive; he scooted closer to the wall so that he could sit up. He didn’t like the way Daniel had looked at him when he walked in. Joe stared at the closed door of the bathroom, and tensed up when the door started to open. “Are you ready for some fun, Hardy? I know I am!” Joe winced in pain as he tried to sit up a little straighter. He noticed that Daniel was no longer in disguise. The colored contacts were gone and he could now see the scar running down along Daniel’s right cheek. “How’re you feeling this morning?” “Oh, I feel great!” replied Joe with a slight smile. “That’s what I always liked about you, Blondie – you never let anything get you down! Let’s see how you deal with what I’m going to do to your girlfriend!” “Leave her alone! She doesn’t know anything about you!” “Well then – guess she’s about to find out!” “You know, it’s just a matter of time before my father and brother find you! You made a big mistake dumping Stacey Martin’s body the way you did!” Daniel had started to head for the bedroom; he stopped mid-way and turned slowly around to glare at Joe. “Yeah, I admit that was a mistake – but it was my only mistake! I made sure of that!” Daniel walked back over to Joe. “Your brother is going to be too busy trying to prove his innocence before he gets a chance to try and get me!” “What do you mean?” asked Joe, fearing the worst. “You know those missing college girls? Well – the Bayport police think your brother is behind it! I made sure of that! I left a witness – two in fact – that is, if that stupid kid survives long enough and is smart enough to find her way out of the woods.” Daniel laughed softly. Joe couldn’t believe what he was hearing – his brother had been framed! Would people believe that Frank would be capable of doing such a terrible thing? Not Chief Collig or Con Riley – and maybe a few other officers that he and Frank had gotten to know. Nor their closest friends – but what about the rest of the Bayport residents? “No one would believe Frank would do something like that!” screamed Joe. “Why – because he’s the great Fenton Hardy’s son?! Even a good kid can turn bad!” ***** Chief Collig was hanging up his phone; he had just gotten a call from Con telling him how the search for the missing teens was going, when Officer Tyler burst into his office. “I think I have a lead on Reese!” Tyler said in a breathless voice. “Say that again!” “I have a lead on Reese. My cousin – he works at a gas station at the edge of town. Early this morning a metallic red Mustang, license plate ‘Cupcake’ pulled in for a fill-up. The general description matches Reese – the suspect sped away without paying for the gas. The car was last seen heading towards Bayport.” “Where exactly is this gas station located, Tyler?” “A few miles out by Emerson National Park,” he replied. “Dispatch – get me through to Sgt. Riley right now!”
Frank sat in the back seat of the car while Fenton drove him and Mr. Preston to the police station. He stared out the window, not really seeing anything. Frank was worried about Joe and Rayne, and trying to keep his fears at bay. He clenched his hands as he thought of how Daniel tried to frame him. So far no one from the press had learned that he was being accused of kidnapping and beating a young college student; Frank knew that he was lucky that the majority of people who had heard the girl’s accusation knew him well enough to doubt her claim. But it was just a matter of time before someone found out. ***** She could feel the cool breeze as if she was on a pier….Someone was standing beside her…holding her arm tightly….She turned to look and saw a pair of dark eyes glaring down at her….She tried to pull away but found that she couldn’t move….There was a noise…someone was running towards them…she tried to turn to see who it was….Suddenly she found herself in the water…its ice coldness enveloped her….Her lungs were burning…she felt someone pulling her upwards….She found herself staring into a pair of blue eyes….His eyes…Joe’s eyes…then he was gone…. With a gasp Rayne woke up. At first she didn’t know where she was – then she heard Joe’s voice. Another voice could be heard – his voice! Daniel’s voice – Daniel, who had pretended to be a police officer – who had kidnapped her and Joe. And now he was going to kill Joe – kill them both! Hearing the sound of laughter, Rayne turned to look over at the closed door. It soon opened, and Daniel was standing in the doorway smiling down at her. “Hi baby – ready to have some fun?” Her eyes grew wide with fear as he approached her. Daniel sat down at the edge of the bed; he took out a switchblade and cut the duct tape that bound her ankles together. He then freed her hands from the bed post. Standing up, Daniel dragged Rayne out of the bed. Holding her tightly in front of him, he half-dragged, half-carried her over to the open door. Standing in the doorway so that Joe could see them. Daniel began to touch Rayne as she struggled to get loose. “Oh man, Joe – you don’t know what you’re missing!”
