CHAPTER 20

Fenton, Frank and Michael were walking up the steps when Chief Collig came bustling out of the station, bumping into Fenton as he emerged.

“Ezra – is everything all right? Did you get some news on Joe and Rayne?”

“Fenton – Mr. Preston, I’m glad you’re both here! We’ve got a lead – follow me, Fenton, and I’ll tell you on the way!”

“I’m going too,” said Michael in a tone that told Chief Collig he wasn’t going to back down.

“All right, you two come with me – Frank, you can follow us. Tyler, you ride with Frank – you can fill him in on what’s going on!”

Although he would have much preferred to ride with the Chief of Police, Officer Tyler obeyed his order and got into the car with Frank. As the two cars sped down the road, Chief Collig and Officer Tyler quickly filled in the events to the Hardys and Mr. Preston.

Tom was the first to see the two cars pull into the station. He started walking over to the first car when the driver’s door opened and a tall, older gentleman dressed in a dark suit and tie got out. There was a day’s growth of stubble on the man’s face and his suit was a bit rumpled. Though the man looked tired, there was a strong presence about him.  “I’m looking for Carl Thompson and Tom Lang,” said Chief Collig.

“I’m Tom Lang, sir – Carl’s in the garage working on a brake job.” Tom glanced nervously at Chief Collig; it wasn’t until he saw his cousin Jonathan that he relaxed.

“Hi Tom, this is Chief Collig – I need you to tell him about the guy in the red Mustang.”

As Rayne continued to struggle against Daniel, he took out his switchblade. Hearing it click open caused Rayne to freeze, Joe looked on with fright.

Daniel laughed with glee as he watched Joe; he placed the blade against Rayne’s face. She felt the icy cold blade and went into survival mode.

Daniel cried out in pain when Rayne slammed her heel down on his foot; she then rammed her elbow into his ribs. Daniel let out a growl and shoved Rayne to the floor. Trying to catch her breath, Rayne quickly rolled onto her back. She saw Daniel step towards her; acting instinctively she shot her leg out and kicked him in between his legs.

As he fell down to his knees, Rayne heard Joe tell her to kick him again! She did and connected with his jaw. Daniel’s eyes rolled up and he fell to the floor. Rayne grabbed his switchblade and hurriedly cut Joe loose.

Joe noticed that Daniel wasn’t completely unconscious; Rayne was having trouble cutting the duct tape around his wrists.

“Never mind, we can get that later – we have to get out of here now!”

Rayne looked over at Daniel and saw that he was starting to recover. She helped Joe up and they ran out of the cabin. Joe saw the car and wished that they could have used it to escape. But they didn’t have time to get the keys, and his wrists were still tied!

Holding onto Joe’s arm, Rayne followed him into the woods.

Daniel Reese lay on the floor cursing angrily, his voice growing louder and louder. He slowly rose up off the floor and limped his way towards the front door. He tumbled out the door, his stride getting stronger and stronger.

Joe ran as fast as he could, feeling the tight grip that Rayne had on his arm. So far she was keeping up with him as they crashed through the wooded area. Joe paused long enough to have Rayne finish cutting the duct tape wrapped around his wrists. He then tucked the switchblade in his pocket and took hold of Rayne’s hand. They heard a loud crash and an equally loud bellow, and Joe knew it was Daniel. Not knowing if Daniel knew how to track someone, Joe moved as fast as he could while trying not to leave an obvious trail.

While Chief Collig was questioning Tom Lang, his cell phone rang. From the Caller ID, he saw that it was Con Riley.

“You got something for me, Riley?”

“Yes, Chief – we found the girl! She managed to give us a description of the assailant and a possible location.”

“I’m on my way!” Chief Collig thanked Tom and then turned to Fenton. “Let’s go, we got another lead!”

Joe wasn’t sure how far ahead they were of Daniel when he found a well-worn trail. Hoping that it would lead them to a road or another cabin, Joe led Rayne down the trail.

Daniel wondered if he was lost. He had been following the noise that Joe and Rayne had made while running through the woods. It had been some time since he heard any more rustling. Daniel walked slowly, hoping to find some evidence that Joe had been there. It was by pure luck that he caught a glimpse of them. Staying behind the trees, Daniel quietly followed them.

Chief Collig, Fenton and Michael Preston arrived at the Ranger station; Frank and Officer Tyler were right behind them. Ranger Wilcox and Con were waiting for them.

Chief Collig gave a slight nod to Con in greeting. “You must be Ranger Wilcox – I’m Chief Ezra Collig.”

Collig introduced Fenton and Michael, also Frank and Officer Tyler.

“What did you find out?” asked Fenton.

“From the directions the girl gave us – it sounds like Reese is holed up in one of the unused cabins. It’s about an hour’s walk from here – you can drive in, but….”

“Reese might hear us coming in,” finished Collig.

“Exactly – I know a back way we can come up to the cabin. There’s a small fishing pier close by – if we go that way...we can sneak up on him.”

“Let’s do that, then!” Fenton said with determination in his voice.
