THE CHAPTERS |
As they walked down the trail, Rayne drew closer to Joe. He put his arm around her shoulders. Rayne felt the protectiveness from his touch and started to tremble. The adrenaline that had coursed through her when they escaped from Daniel was ebbing away. Feeling her body trembling, Joe tightened his hold. “You’re okay now, Rayne. I think we got away from him. I haven’t heard anything for awhile now!” “I – I think…you’re right! It’s just – Oh my God! I can’t believe what happened!! I can’t believe I – I…” “Yeah, that was pretty awesome!” Joe replied with a grin. “I couldn’t have done it better myself! Did your Dad teach you how to defend yourself?” Rayne turned her head and stared at Joe, the corner of her mouth twitched and then she began to giggle. “Um – no he didn’t. Sandra Bullock did!” Rayne snorted with laughter. “Sandra Bullock? The movie actress?” asked Joe in puzzlement. “Uh huh – you know from the scene in Miss Congeniality? During the beauty pageant?” Joe had stopped walking and stared in disbelief at Rayne. When he saw that she was being serious a small smile flitted across his face. “Remind me to write her a fan letter thanking her for making that movie!” Joe smirked. “And when we get back home – I’m definitely showing you some defense moves!” “Sounds good to me!” They walked in silence for while. Rayne let out a sigh. “I just couldn’t take it anymore,” she said softly. “He’s not going to hurt you anymore.” “It wasn’t just because of that! I mean it was part of it – while he was holding me – it was like sensory overload! He has a lot of anger and rage – I had to get away from it. And then when I felt the knife….” Rayne shuddered; Joe stopped and pulled her close; hugging her tight. “You’re all right now – every thing is going to be all right,” Joe soothed. Daniel stood quietly watching the young couple. He was about to make his move when they pulled apart and started walking again. Ten minutes later Joe saw that they were coming to a clearing, and he quickened his steps. He smiled over at Rayne as they came out of the woods. Rayne returned his smile until she saw where they were. “Joe, we can’t be here! We have to leave!” Joe was surprised by the fear he heard in Rayne’s voice. Then he saw the small pier and remembered about her dream. It was at that moment that Daniel came charging out at them. ***** Chief Collig had called in for some reinforcements; they arrived in less than twenty minutes. With Ranger Wilcox leading the way, the men headed into the woods. Moving quickly and quietly as possible, the group of men traveled towards the fishing pier. As he followed Ranger Wilcox, Fenton thought about Joe and Rayne. He knew that Joe could take care of himself and that he would do everything in his power to protect Rayne. Fenton only hoped that his youngest didn’t do anything drastic. Michael walked beside Fenton; his thoughts were about Rayne and Joe. He knew about Fenton’s reputation and had heard about his sons. Although he felt that Joe would protect his daughter, Michael was worried that Joe would do something reckless. Would Joe control his reckless streak to keep Rayne safe? Frank was behind Fenton and Michael; his thoughts were also on Joe. He was recalling the last time they had dealt with Daniel Reese. He and Joe had tracked Daniel to an abandoned house. Daniel had brought one of his victims there; he hadn’t had a chance to hurt her yet. But when Joe saw Daniel start to attack the young girl, he charged into the house. A fight ensued and somehow Daniel had gotten cut on his face. Frank was afraid of what Daniel would do to Joe.
Rayne screamed when Joe was suddenly knocked to the ground. Joe lay face down in the dirt, the wind knocked out of him. Kneeling over Joe, Daniel rolled him onto his back. He pulled his arm back to hit Joe when he found himself flying through the air. Joe had managed to throw Daniel off of him. He scrambled up and turned around ready to defend himself. Rayne searched for something to use as a weapon. She found a tree branch but didn’t think it would cause any harm. Daniel quickly got up off the ground; with a growl he charged at Joe. Moving slightly to his right, Joe side-stepped away from the attack. He stuck his foot out and tripped Daniel. Before Joe could move out of the way, Daniel kicked out his leg to cause Joe to fall. He then sprang on top of the young Hardy, clasping his hands around his neck. Joe slammed his fists down hard on Daniel’s arms trying to loosen his grip. But Daniel’s hold was too strong. Joe could feel himself weaken. He was starting to lose consciousness when the grip on his neck loosened. Daniel was no longer paying attention to Rayne; his one thought was to kill Joe. A sharp pain shot up his back when a large rock hit his body. More rocks were raining down on him, one hitting his ear. Letting go of Joe, Daniel reached up and touched the side of his head. He stared dumbly at the blood on his hand. “Leave him alone!” Rayne screamed. Glancing down at the motionless Joe, Daniel jumped up and went for Rayne.
The rescue team came to a stop when they heard someone scream. Michael turned to Fenton, fear shining in his eyes. “That’s Rayne – I know it is!” Frank tore away from the group; if that was Rayne then Joe was nearby and in trouble. As Frank came out of the wooded area, he saw Joe staggering over to the pier. Running towards his brother, Frank noticed two other figures on the pier. He recognized Daniel and Rayne; the young woman was fighting off Daniel. With growing horror, he watched as Rayne fell into the lake and Joe dove in after her.
