THE CHAPTERS |
Daniel had been so angry as he went after Rayne that he didn’t notice Joe take a deep breath. Taking in a few more deep lung-filling breaths of air, Joe rose up and ran to help Rayne. Feeling a little weak from the lack of oxygen, it took a few seconds for him to get up to speed. He saw Rayne struggling with Daniel, and smiled when he saw her strike Daniel in the face. Then Daniel did something that always caused Joe to lose his temper: he smacked Rayne across her face. Daniel had a tight grip on Rayne’s arm when he hit her. He shoved her away from him, not noticing how close to the edge of the pier they were. Daniel had hit her so hard that Rayne felt dizzy. The next thing she knew she was falling off the pier and feeling the ice-cold water as she splashed into the lake. It was a short sprint to the pier; Joe was glad that Daniel was too busy staring down at the water to notice him. Although he managed to take a deep breath before he dove into the water, Joe knew that he wouldn’t be able to hold his breath for very long. The chokehold Daniel put on him had taken a lot out of him. Frank had arrived at the pier he reached out and grabbed Daniel’s shoulder, spinning the man around. Before Daniel knew what was happening, Frank let his fist fly and hit him in the face. Daniel staggered back, a look of surprise and shock on his face that soon turned to anger. He started to charge Frank, only to be stopped when he was struck in the chest by Frank’s foot. As Daniel clutched his chest, his knees buckling, Frank took hold of Daniel’s face and slammed his knee into the rapist’s chin.
Rayne could feel her lungs burning; she didn’t have a chance to take in a deep breath of air before she fell into the water. It was dark in the water; she could just make out the sun’s light as she went down. Rayne knew she had to get up to the surface but her body wouldn’t obey her commands. Then she saw a shadow. It came closer to her. Joe – it had to be Joe, Rayne thought.
Joe was glad that the shirt Rayne was wearing had large white stripes across it, for that was how he spotted her. He quickly swam down and reached out for her. As he started to swim up to the surface, he realized that he wasn’t going to make it. His legs felt weak and he needed air!
Fenton and Michael reached Frank’s side as Daniel fell to the ground, unconscious. “Where’s Rayne – where’s my daughter?” cried Michael. “She fell into the water; Joe jumped in after her! Something must be wrong – he should have brought her up already!” Frank replied. Slipping out of his shoes and throwing his jacket off, Michael dove into the water, Fenton right behind him. As Con handcuffed Daniel, Frank stood looking over the pier, anxiously waiting.
Joe was still holding onto Rayne when Michael reached him, Fenton by his side. Taking Rayne, Fenton began to swim up to the surface. Michael grabbed Joe and followed. First Fenton and then Michael broke the surface, gasping for breath. Holding Joe across his shoulders, Michael swam towards the pier. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Fenton swimming alongside him with Rayne. Ranger Wilcox and Chief Collig leaned over to help pull up Joe and Rayne, and several other officers helped Fenton and Michael back up onto the pier. Rescue breathing was begun on Joe and Rayne, while Frank, Fenton and Michael hovered nearby. Joe let out a cough, and Ranger Wilcox turned him on his side as Joe spit out some lake water. “Rayne?” said Joe in a hoarse whisper. A few anxious minutes later, Rayne began to cough and spit up water. ***** Laura Hardy and Emma Preston were waiting in the emergency room at Bayport General; Fenton had called home to let Laura know that they had found Joe and Rayne. Trying not to frighten her, Fenton also told her about the near-drowning and that, as a precaution, Joe and Rayne were being taken to the hospital. The two women had arrived a few minutes before their children and husbands had. Michael carried Rayne in, Joe, with Frank’s help, walked in on his own. Laura ran to Joe while Emma went to Rayne. “I’m okay, Mom.” Joe said as Laura hugged him. “I’m fine, Mom – just a little cold,” Rayne managed to say as Emma kissed her face. Two orderlies brought wheelchairs, one each for Joe and Rayne. Emma and Laura stood anxiously as they watched their children being wheeled away. An hour later Joe and Rayne were pronounced well enough to go home. They had orders to stay in their beds and keep warm. “Fenton, I want to thank you for saving Rayne.” Michael held out his hand. “And thank you for saving Joe,” replied Fenton as he took Michael’s hand.
Later that evening, Joe sneaked out of bed to get the cordless phone. “Hello?” “Hi, how are you doing?” Rayne smiled. “Better, thanks to you.” “It wasn’t me – I’m not the one who pulled a ‘Miss Congeniality’ on that scum bag!” Joe heard a small chuckle from Rayne. “I better get going before Frank or my mom find out that I’m out of bed. I wanted to check on you – make sure you were okay.” “I am – will I see you in class next week?” “Yeah, I think so. See you then. Bye.” “Bye.” Joe returned the cordless and turned to go back to his room only to find Frank blocking his way. Hands on his hips, Frank gave his brother a mock glare. “I should tell Mom you’re out of bed.” “But you won’t,” smirked Joe. “What makes you think I won’t?” huffed Frank. “Because then I’d have to tell Callie about your Sports Illustrated Swimsuit calendar that you have hidden under your mattress.” “How did…I do not….Have you been going through my things again?!” Joe just smiled sweetly as he went back to bed. ***** It was a beautiful fall day….The leaves on the trees were a golden brown….She was walking down a park path…by her side was a tall blonde, blue-eyed young man….Rayne smiled over at Joe…a peaceful calm was in the air…they continued to walk….At the end of the path Rayne saw someone….It was a young woman with ash-blonde hair and gray-blue eyes….
