Fenton Hardy muttered silently to himself, wondering how he got into this situation. He had no new cases and was anticipating a few leisurely days off. Unfortunately Laura, his beautiful blonde wife, had other plans. And let’s not forget Gertrude. Whey did she have to be the first born? Fenton let out a sneeze caused by a small cloud of dust. Why did attics have to be so dusty? Hearing Laura coming up the stairs, Fenton pretended to be hard at work. Laura appeared a few seconds later. “Fenton, Ezra is here to see you.” “Thank you, Ezra,” whispered Fenton. “What was that, dear?” asked Laura, a teasing note in her voice. “What? – Oh, I was – um, hoping he doesn’t have a case for me. I was really looking forward to a few days rest.” “That’s what I thought. Ezra wanted to wait in your office.” “Hmm…maybe he does have a case he needs help with.”
Fenton was surprised to see Con Riley there also. “Hello Con, Ezra. What brings you here? Oh and let me thank you, Laura had me cleaning up the attic!” “I wish I could tell you that this is a social call – “ “Why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like what you’re about to tell me?” Fenton gave Collig a wary look. Collig glanced over at Con and gave him a slight nod. With a heavy sigh, Con told Fenton about the phone call he had received. As the detective listened a deep forbidding fear washed over his body. ***** After having lunch with her father, Rayne headed for the university library. She had a half hour before her next class and the library wasn’t that far from the Science building. She found a quiet corner, sat down, and took out her English book. She let out a yawn; the library’s quietness was starting to affect her. The precognitive dreams she had been having did not give her a restful night’s sleep. A few minutes later, Rayne had fallen asleep….
Rayne stood in a dark hallway, she saw a door at the end of the hallway…She started to walk slowly towards the door, her heat beating rapidly…Rayne was scared….Then she felt someone take her hand….she glanced over and saw the familiar blonde-headed stranger…Rayne didn’t know why, but she felt safe….he would protect her, even if it meant his life…Suddenly the hallway disappeared…she was now alone…No, that wasn’t true, there was someone else….Someone evil….a jagged scar ran down his cheek…Rayne was overcome with fear….fear for herself….but most of all fear for….
With a loud gasp, Rayne sat up in her chair – unable to remember where she was. “Are you all right?” asked a soft voice. Still breathing rapidly, Rayne almost let out a scream. She turned to find a young man with dark hair and eyes staring at her with concern. “Whoa – I’m not going to hurt you.” Rayne blinked a few times before she replied to the young man. “I’m – I’m okay – I must have fallen asleep and had – had a nightmare.” “That must have been some dream….you were pretty scared there for a minute.” “Thank you for your concern…” “Frank – my name is Frank Hardy.” Smiling, Frank held out his hand towards the pretty girl. “Nice to meet you Frank, I’m Rayne Preston.” She took Frank’s hand – and when her hand closed over his, Rayne let out a small gasp. Frank grew concerned once more as he saw the distraught expression on Rayne’s face. “You’re his brother!” *****
Fenton slowly sat down. How was he going to tell Laura? When Frank and Joe had taken on the case, she had been worried sick for their safety. His worry soon turned to anger as he looked up at his old friend. “Why weren’t Joe and Frank told about the move? They are supposed to be informed about this kind of information!” “I don’t know, Fenton. From what Con told me there was miscommunication between the prison officials and the local police.” “Wonderful!” There was a knock on the door, and Laura walked in. “Would anyone like some coffee and a slice of pie?” She had walked in with a smile on her face; she immediately noticed the solemn faces. “Fenton, what’s wrong?” Collig nudged Con; it was time for them to leave. “We’ll take a rain check on the coffee, Laura. Fenton, you know where to find me.” “Thank you, Ezra.” Fenton rose from his chair and walked the two men out. He then turned to face his wife. Laura stood quietly; her stance showed she was read for the worst.
“Daniel Reese has escaped.”
