Daniel Reese smiled at his reflection in the mirror. His jet black hair was now a mousy brown – yellow colored contacts had turned his eyes green and his scar was now hidden under expertly applied make-up “What did I ell you? Not even your own mother would recognize you!” Daniel smiled at the pretty red-head; he had to admit that Stacey knew her business. Stacey stared adoringly at Daniel, unable to believe how lucky she was. She hadn’t planned on going with her cousin to Southport prison – Stacey really never cared for her cousin’s boyfriend – but if she hadn’t gone, she never would have met Daniel! Yes, Daniel thought, she really knew what she was doing. Too bad he had to get rid of her. She was a cute kid – but a major liability. He gazed hungrily at her body….But no one said he couldn’t have any fun first! ***** “You’re his brother!”
What had she meant by that? That thought raced through Frank’s mind as he stared in shocked silence at Rayne. “What do you mean?” Rayne saw the worry and fear in Frank’s face – she hadn’t meant to say that out loud. She quickly shut her English book and stuffed it inside her book bag. “Nothing – I didn’t mean anything by that! I have to go now – I’ll be late for my class!” Before he could stop her, Rayne was already out the door. Frank stared at her retreating back. He was about to follow her when Callie came to his side. “Did you find that book you were looking for?” “Wha - ?” Frank looked at Callie, his face filled with confusion. “Frank, what’s wrong?” “I – I don’t know. I saw this girl – she seemed scared and I went to check on her – she said something about having a nightmare and then – then she said ‘You’re his brother!’ and ran away.” “That is odd! Have you ever seen her before?” “No, but I did get her name. I wonder if she lives in one of the dorms.” “Knowing you, I’m sure you’ll find her.” Frank smiled at Callie and gave her a hug; they then went in search of the book that he had originally come for.
Rayne was in such a hurry to get out of the library that she wasn’t watching where she was going. She had bumped into a few students, on her way to the Science building. She had slowed to a fast walk and was rounding a corner when she ran into someone. Joe had just finished getting a drink of water from the fountain when he turned to head for his classroom. The next thing he knew he was sitting on the floor and staring into the most beautiful almond-shaped eyes he ever saw. Sitting in front of him was an African-American girl, her shoulder-length hair fell in a mass of curls, her skin was a light caramel color, she appeared to have a slender build. She had an oval face with high cheekbones, and almond-shaped eyes that were a cornflower blue. Rayne’s eyes went wide with shock when she saw the young man sitting in front of her! He had blonde wavy hair and sapphire blue eyes! It was him – she just knew it was! Joe smiled and Rayne thought that his eyes seemed to sparkle. “I’m sorry about that! I guess I should look where I’m going,” Joe said, finding that he couldn’t stop smiling. “It’s not your fault – I was the one – I mean, it was my fault!” Joe finally realized that they were both still on the floor. He quickly got up and held out a helping hand to the pretty young girl. “I’m Joe Hardy, by the way.” “I kno…I’m Rayne Preston.” Joe picked up her book bag. “You’re the second ‘Preston’ I’ve met today! That’s my professor’s last name.” “You have Professor Preston for American History?” “Yes I do – do you know him?” “He’s my father!” Rayne laughed. “I know what you’re thinking – how did brown-eyed Preston have a blue-eyed daughter!? I have my mother’s eyes; my parents met when my father was stationed in Germany.” “Truthfully I was wondering if you were wearing colored contacts.” Rayne had glanced down at her watch. “Oh my goodness! Look at the time – I’m late for my class!” “Uh oh, so am I!” Joe hesitated; he didn’t want to leave just yet, taking out his wallet, he found a business card. He hurriedly found a pen and wrote on the back of the card and then gave the card to Rayne. “The first number is my home number; the second one is my cell. I’d – I’d like to talk with you again.” “I’d like that too. We just moved here, I’m not sure what our phone number is…” “We have Caller ID – when you call, I’ll have the number.” “Bye Joe, it was nice bumping into you!” Joe watched Rayne walk away, then he gave a little sigh and headed for his class. As he walked down the hallway, he noticed that Rayne was up ahead. A huge smile crossed his face as Joe realized that Rayne was going to the same classroom that he was headed for. He waited till she sat down before he walked in. He placed his book bag on the lab table… “Mind if I sit here?” Rayne turned, surprised to see Joe there. Then a smile slowly flitted across her face, as Joe sat next to her.
