THE CHAPTERS |
Joe couldn’t remember when he had felt so happy. Being with Rayne had made the time go by too fast. He just hoped that he paid enough attention to the professor. He was definitely going to enjoy his Forensic class! As Joe walked down the parking lot, he tossed the van keys up in the air. He missed catching the keys on his last toss; he bent down and reached for them, then paused over them for a moment. He stared down at the key ring as he picked them up. His good mood had disappeared. The key ring had been a gift from Vanessa; it had been specially made for him. The ring was a round circle with his initials drawn in; what no one knew, though, was that Vanessa had also had her initials superimposed into Joe’s. Joe realized that this was the first time he hadn’t thought of her. She had been gone for only three months, how could he forget her already? All because of a pretty face and a smile. Joe sighed; he thought he had stopped being that “ love ‘em and leave ‘em” guy. “Hey kid, you okay?” Joe looked up and found a tall, well-muscled man standing in front of him. “Yeah – I’m fine.” “You look pretty sad.” The man brushed back his mousy brown hair. “Has to be about a girl – am I right? A guy looks as sad as you – it’s gotta be about a girl!” Joe gave him a sad smile. “Yeah, sorta.” “I knew it. Cheer up! Maybe she’s not the one for you - and from what I can see – there are a lot of pretty girls you can choose from right here!” “That’s the problem,” Joe mumbled as walked past the brown-haired man.
Daniel Reese had a sneer on his face as he watched Joe walk away. The disguise and body building had helped change how he looked. Changed it so well that not even the great Fenton Hardy’s golden boy had recognized him! Daniel lightly touched his cheek. The Hardy brat had put the scar there and he was going to pay for what he had done…real soon. ****** When Frank arrived home, he sensed the tension between his parents. He noticed that Laura appeared upset but was trying to hide it. “Mom, Dad – what’s wrong?” Fenton shook his head, a small smile on his face. “I should have known – I’ll tell you once Joe comes home. This is something you both need to hear.” Frank didn’t like the fact that he had to wait. He wanted to know now! Knowing that he couldn’t change his father’s mind, Frank decided to pass the time away by finishing up some of his homework.
Two hours later, Joe arrived home; he was still feeling blue when he walked inside the house. Imagine Joe’s surprise when Frank practically pounced on him. “It’s about time you got here!” Frank dragged him into the living room where Fenton and Laura were watching the news. Standing in front of the television, Frank stared down at his parents. “Okay, Joe is here – now what is going on? Is mom sick – are you sick – Aunt Gertrude?!” “Mom is sick?” With a concerned look on his face, Joe turned to Laura. Fenton stood up, he touched Frank’s arm. “Calm down – your mother is fine – I’m fine – as is your aunt!” Frank sighed with relief, but he noticed that Fenton and Laura were still worried. “Then, what’s wrong?” Fenton felt Laura slip her hand in his; he gave her hand a comforting squeeze. “Chief Collig and Con came by today – Con received a call from the Southport police department….” Fenton paused for a second. “He was informed that Daniel Reese was being transferred to a maximum prison facility – but the police van was run off the road, the guards were killed and Reese escaped.” The Hardy brothers were shocked by the news – Joe thought about the young women who had been violated and then murdered by the deranged psycho. Frank remembered Laura’s sleepless nights as she worried about her sons – and the rage he felt for Daniel Reese. “Why weren’t we told? The D.A. is supposed to let us know of any changes to Reese’s incarceration!” bellowed Frank. “I don’t know, and there is nothing we can do about that now! Right now, you and Joe need to stay together. I have no doubt that Reese will try and get revenge.” “That’s fine for us,” said Joe. “But what about mom?” “Your mother is going away…” “Fenton, I told you – I’m not leaving!” “Yes you are!” yelled the three Hardy men. Laura Hardy was now standing, hands on her hips as she glared at her husband and two sons. “I am not going to leave and wonder if you or the boys are hurt! I’m staying here!” “Laura – it’s too dangerous for you to stay here! What if Reese – “ “Then you better find him so he can’t hurt me. If you want to have Ezra post an officer to watch the house – I’ll go along with that. But I am not leaving.”
A dark colored sedan came to a stop in front of a dark alley. The passenger door opened, and there was a thud as a body was shoved out of the car. The door was slammed shut the car sped away. The bruised and battered body of a young woman named Stacey Martin was found later by a homeless man. He bent over the body, checking for a pulse but found none. He spotted a police cruiser and ran to flag it down. ****** Rayne found herself in the dark hallway again…This time she was alone….Joe wasn’t there…”Rayne!”….She heard someone call her name….she ran down the hallway….”Help me, please help me”, the voice pleaded….As she came to a doorway, Rayne suddenly realized that it was Joe who was calling for her!....Shaking with fear, Rayne stepped into the room and screamed….
