Rayne sat up in bed. She was breathing rapidly, her body shivering with fright. She brought up her legs, hugging her knees as she listened and waited. Had she screamed out loud – or just in her dream? She could still hear the scream vibrating through her head. The house was quiet; all she heard was her breathing and the soft breeze as the leaves rustled against the house.

Rayne climbed out of bed and went down the hall to the bathroom. Trying to be as quiet as possible, she turned on the faucet and splashed her face with cold water. She stared at her reflection in the mirror – she could see the fear shining brightly in her eyes. She didn’t know why this dream had scared her so much.

Rayne closed her eyes and tried to recall the dream – her eyes flew open as she realized why she felt so scared. This dream was about her – something terrible was going to happen to her!

Turning off the light and going back to her room, Rayne thought about some of her other precognitive dreams. Whenever she had one about herself – she could never ‘see’ herself in the dream! Although Joe had been calling out to her, he hadn’t been in the dream. Rayne bit her lower lip. Even though Joe hadn’t been in the dream – in a way it was still about him. Joe was still in danger and, it seemed, so was she!

That morning as the Hardys were sitting down for breakfast, there was a knock on their front door. Fenton motioned for Laura to stay in the kitchen; Joe stood ready to protect her. Frank stood off to the side as Fenton went to see who was at the door. When he saw Chief Collig through the peephole, Fenton signaled Frank that all was well and opened the door.

“Come in, Ezra – have you had breakfast? Laura made plenty.”

“No thank you, Fenton – I wouldn’t mind some coffee.”

As they walked towards the kitchen, Collig tapped Fenton’s shoulder.

“Fenton, I have something to tell you and I don’t think Laura – “

“She’ll only ask me why you’re here – we’ve been married for a long time; she understands that sometimes my line of work is ugly. She may not like it, but she understands.”

The kitchen in the Hardy home was large enough to hold a small table that sat four people. Frank and Joe were sitting at the table; Laura had gotten up from the table and was standing by the stove.

“Would you like some breakfast Ezra?” she asked.

“No, thank you Laura, some coffee would be nice though.”

Laura poured him a cup. “Gertrude made some cinnamon rolls before she left, I could warm one up for you.”

“Chief Collig’s eyes lit up. “Now that I won’t pass up!”

Joe turned to his mother, a look of disbelief on his face. “You never mentioned there were still some of Aunt Gertrude’s cinnamon rolls left!”

Laura smiled sheepishly at Joe. “Oops!”

Frank patted his brother’s back. “Don’t feel bad Joe – not even I knew about it!”

“There were only a few left and your father hadn’t eaten any. That’s why I didn’t say anything.” Laura said as she gave Fenton and Chief Collig each a warm cinnamon roll.

Fenton waited till Collig had eaten half the roll before he satisfied his curiosity. “All right, Ezra – enough stalling. What did you have to tell us?”

“Last night a young woman’s body was found – when I saw how badly beaten she was….” Collig paused sadly before he continued. “I believe Daniel Reese is in Bayport and I need Frank and Joe to come down to the station. They know more about Reese’s…” He glanced over at Laura. “I need them to read the report and have a look at the body.”

Frank and Joe glanced at each other and then rose from the table.

“Good thing my first class doesn’t start until ten.” Joe remarked.

“I’m going with you. Laura, make sure the alarm is on at all times!” Fenton gave Laura a kiss.

Daniel flicked his cigarette away as he watched the house at the corner of Elm and High Street. He had seen the police cruiser park in front of the house. He wondered if they had found Stacey yet. Daniel moved behind a large elm tree when the front door opened. He saw a barrel-chested man walk out of the house first. Daniel recognized him as the man driving the police cruiser. Fenton Hardy followed behind him, then Frank and Joe.

As he watched the four men get into the cruiser, he thought how easy it had been to find where the Hardys lived. The citizens of Bayport were so helpful!

Just before Fenton got into the car, Daniel saw a pretty petite blonde woman come running out of the house. His interest now piqued, he watched as Fenton got out of the car.

“Laura, is something wrong?”

“No, I just didn’t think that was a proper good-bye.”

Fenton laughed as he pulled Laura into a hug, then gave her another kiss. Laura waved goodbye and then went back into the house. As the car pulled away from the curb, Daniel moved away from the tree.

“Hmm – Hardy has himself some looker! She could be a nice little distraction once I’m done with Blondie!”

Taking out another cigarette, Daniel left, all the while thinking about the fun he was going to have with Mrs. Hardy.

Callie headed for the cafeteria, intending to meet Frank there. He had called her the night before, saying that he had something important to tell her. She was halfway to the cafeteria when her cell phone rang. Callie smiled when she saw that it was Frank.

“Hi! I’m already at the university and will be in the cafeteria in about two seconds!”

“Oh – I’m sorry, Callie; I’m going to be a little late.”

“What exactly is a ‘little late’?”

“I’m not sure – Chief Collig asked us to look at – something.”

“Does this have to do with the important news you have to tell me?”

“Yeah, it does. I’ll try and get there as soon as possible.”

With a resigned sigh, Callie agreed to wait for Frank. She found a table and sat down. Since she had some time, Callie decided to do some studying.

“Excuse me – do mind sharing this table?”

Callie looked up and saw a pretty girl with caramel-colored skin, light curly brown hair and cornflower-blue eyes.

“I’m sorry, but the place is really crowded,” the newcomer said.

“Oh – I didn’t mean to seem rude! I guess I didn’t notice! Please sit down.”

As Rayne took a seat, she noticed the book that Callie was reading.

“Criminal Law – are you studying to be a lawyer?”

“Um – no, not really! My boyfriend is a detective – and I thought – well, I’ve helped him out a few times and I thought if I knew a little bit about certain laws…”

“You could help him out some more?”

“Something like that – I’m Callie, by the way!”

“Nice to meet you, Callie – I’m Rayne.”

As the two young women got comfortable getting to know each other, they didn’t notice the tall brown-haired man watching them. It wasn’t until he passed a few feet away from them that Rayne suddenly felt ill.
