THE CHAPTERS |
On the way to the station, Frank asked Chief Collig if the victim had any bite marks on her body. When he confirmed that she did, Frank reminded the Chief that when Daniel Reese had been arrested, the medical examiner had made a mold of his teeth. That was how they were able to prove that Daniel was the one committing the crimes. Using the police-band radio, Collig had the dispatcher transfer the call to the medical examiner. By the time the men arrived, the medical examiner was able to make a positive identification using the dental mold. As the Hardy brothers stared sadly at the body of Stacey Martin, Frank couldn’t help but feel afraid for Callie and Laura. This was the first time that Joe was glad Vanessa had moved to Japan. It meant that she wouldn’t be in any danger, although he worried about his mother. Fenton Hardy had three family members for whom he was filled with worry and concern. He was glad that Gertrude had been called away and was out of town, although a part of him wished that she was staying at home; at least then, Laura wouldn’t be alone. ***** Frank and Joe just made it to Bayport U. with a few minutes to spare. Joe followed his brother to the cafeteria; he wanted to get something to drink. After seeing what Daniel had done to Stacey Martin, Joe had a bad taste in his mouth that he wanted to dispel. Frank spotted Callie and was surprised to see who she was sitting with. “I don’t believe it – it’s her!” Joe had also seen Callie. When he saw who she was with he wondered why Frank seemed so upset. “What’s wrong – do you know Rayne?” “Me – how do you know her?!” As Frank and Joe walked towards Callie and Rayne, they didn’t pay attention to the man who walked past them.
When Daniel saw the pretty blonde and brunette, he was tempted to go over to them. But he curtailed his urges; he had other things to do. Daniel needed to keep his priorities straight. He already knew he had made one mistake by dumping Stacey’s body out in the open. The Hardys were sure to be on his trail. Daniel fought the urge to smile when he saw Frank and Joe walk past him.
Frank noticed that Joe increased his speed as they went over to Callie and Rayne. There was a genuinely happy expression on his younger brother’s face, which surprised Frank.
“Here comes my boyfriend now!” Callie waved Frank over. Rayne turned around and let out a gasp when she saw who was walking over. She turned back to face Callie. “Frank Hardy is your boyfriend?!” Callie looked suspiciously at Rayne. “How do you know Frank?” “She’s the girl I met in the library yesterday,” answered Frank. “What I want to know is – how did you know that Joe and I are brothers?!” Joe placed his hand on Rayne’s shoulder, giving her a reassuring squeeze. He stared over at Frank and Callie. “What’s with the inquisition, bro?” “It’s all right, Joe,” said Rayne as she patted his hand. “He’s just being the protective older brother....” She looked over to Frank. “I can explain everything, and trust me – I want to help protect Joe too.”
Daniel stood at the exit for a few minutes – he watched Frank and Joe walk over to the two girls. He saw how the blonde smiled fondly at Frank and how Joe appeared to be taken with the brunette. Daniel chuckled softly as he left. This was getting even better – the Hardy brothers had girlfriends! Feeling in a very good mood, Daniel was walking to parking lot B when he saw a dark-haired girl. She was standing in front of a late-model Ford; the hood was raised and the girl was looking glumly at the engine. “Oh no, we can’t have this!” Daniel smiled at the young girl. Nineteen-year-old Amber looked up; her eyes shone brightly when she saw the tall muscular man standing next to her. She tossed back her waist-length dark hair and smiled sweetly at him. “Do you know anything about cars?” “Not really, but if you need a ride – I could take you wherever you want to go.” Amber couldn’t believe her good fortune! She was about to say yes, when something stopped her. The guy was handsome, he seemed nice but there was just something about him. “Well, that’s very nice of you, but – my mom always told me never take rides from strangers.” Amber took a few steps back. Daniel sensed her hesitation; he gave her his best smile. “And she was right! My name is…Frank – Frank Hardy.” Amber relaxed; although she hadn’t been raised in Bayport – she had heard of the famous Hardy brothers! She knew she would be safe. “Hi Frank, I’m Amber and I really could use a ride home.” Daniel put his arm around Amber’s shoulders and led her to his van. Thirty minutes later, Amber realized her mistake as she was being tied up. ***** Frank sat next to Callie while Joe sat with Rayne. “Okay, I’m listening.” “Frank!” Joe glared over at his brother. Rayne had to smile at Frank; she turned her head to give Joe a smile. “It’s okay, Joe – Frank is just worried about you.” “And I am, but that doesn’t mean I have the right to be rude. I’m sorry.” “Apology accepted. What I’m going to tell you is going to sound like science fiction. But believe me – it’s all true.”
