Frank had suggested that they get some drinks before Rayne started. He and Joe left to get them, returning quickly and, giving the girls their drinks. “I didn’t receive my special gift until I was six. I was in bed when I felt someone sit on my bed. When I opened my eyes I saw my grandmother sitting there. She smiled at me and told me that she was going away but not to be sad because she would always be with me. She sang me to sleep. When I woke up the next morning I found my mother crying. My father was hugging her. When he saw me; he came over and told me that my grandparents had been in a car wreck.” Rayne took a sip of her drink. “A few days later I started having…visions. Sometimes they come in dreams. I can also sense things when I touch someone – like I did with you.” Callie and Joe were fascinated by Rayne’s story, Frank was skeptical. Joe could tell that his brother was having trouble believing Rayne. “I found out later from my mother that grandma had the same gift.” Frank leaned forward. “If she could see into the future – why didn’t she prevent the accident?” “Frank, you don’t sound like you believe her,” Joe said softly. “Have you forgotten about the Randles? More specifically, Colin and Nella?” Rayne looked questionlly at the Hardy brothers and Callie, who explained who the Randles were. “They moved here several years ago. The whole family had psychic abilities. Colin was the most gifted of the family. They moved away not too long ago.” “And if I remember correctly, Colin always said that he could never see into his own future. He might be able to sense something but that was about it,” Joe said. Frank raised his hands in defeat. “Okay – okay, you got me! Rayne, I do believe you! After meeting the Randles, I’ve seen that psychic abilities exist. I guess I was trying to test you.” “That’s okay, Frank. I can understand why you did it.” Rayne smiled at the older Hardy brother. Callie’s curiosity got the best of her; it was her turn to lean forward. “What did you mean when you said that you wanted to protect Joe too?” “Because of a dream – I have what are called precognitive dreams – the dreams tell me what might happen in the future – they’re like a warning.” Rayne paused as she turned to look at Joe. “ I keep dreaming that I’m in the water – I’m rescued by a male with blue eyes – sapphire blue eyes. But I keep seeing you going down deeper into the water – I try to reach for you but you’re too far away.” “Are you trying to say that my brother is going to drown sometime in the future?” asked Frank. “Not sometime in the future, Frank. I mean in the next few days.” ******** Frank sat in front of his computer; he had been staring at it for five minutes. Three days had passed since Rayne had told them about her dream. Since that time two female university students had disappeared. To make matters worse, an anonymous tip had been called in; the caller claimed that one of the students had left with Frank Hardy. Frank heard a loud thump coming from Joe’s room, and then he could hear his brother let out a string of curses. Getting up from his chair, Frank went into his brother’s room. He found Joe standing in the middle of the room. From his brother’s stance, Frank could tell that he was angry. Taking in the mess in the room, he thought it looked even messier. Joe gave one of his school books a hard kick. “Whoa – I know Calculus isn’t your favorite subject but was that necessary? I mean, what did that book ever do to you!?” Joe spun around and saw his brother smiling at him. He glared at Frank for a minute, but his brother just kept smiling. Joe let out a loud sigh and started to feel his frustration ebb out of his body. Frank noticed the change. “You feel better now?” “Not really – I just feel – really frustrated! Why can’t Chief Collig see the connection between Reese’s escape and the missing girls!?” “Joe, we don’t really know that—” “Yes you do, Frank! And don’t tell me that you don’t! Reese made a mistake when he dumped Stacey Martin’s body! So he went back to his old routine! Stealing a vehicle, kidnapping a victim...and one of these days some kid or jogger is going to find the body!” Frank walked over to his brother who had turned his back on him; he placed his hands on Joe’s shoulders. He could feel how tense Joe was. “Joe – there have been no sightings of Reese in Bayport. I’m not saying that I don’t see the connection – I do. But without any clues, the Chief isn’t going for that angle – not yet anyway.” Joe turned around to look at Frank, his face a mask of worry and fear. “I’m just so scared for Mom and…” “So am I Joe, so am I.” ****** Daniel sat contently on the floor of the abandoned house. He took a deep drag of his cigarette as he stared at the young blonde-haired girl across the room. He was waiting for her to regain consciousness. He got up off the floor when he saw her begin to stir. Twenty-year-old Lindsey didn’t know where she was as she opened her eyes. The last thing she remembered was meeting a handsome man by the name of Frank Hardy. He had seemed so nice when he first approached her at the bus stop. She had missed her bus and he had offered her a ride home. It wasn’t until they got to his car that everything went wrong. Before she knew it, Frank had struck her – everything went black after that. Lindsey tried to lift her hand when she realized that her hands were bound at the wrist. She tried to scream for help but only a muffled sound came out of her mouth. Hearing footsteps, Lindsey turned her head and saw ‘Frank” coming towards her. She started to cry when ‘Frank’ started to undo his pants.
