THE CHAPTERS |
She could feel the icy coldness of the water….Her lungs were burning…they needed air….Just when she thought she couldn’t take it anymore, Rayne was no longer in the water….She was in a dark room…she stumbled forward trying to find a light switch….Her hand touched something cold….Rayne tried to make out what this thing was….The room was suddenly bathed in a bright light….Rayne let out a gasp when she realized that she was behind bars….No – not behind them, there was someone else….She could see a body lying curled in the corner….”Joe?”….The person moaned and slowly turned over….Rayne sank to the floor….it wasn’t Joe…..It was Frank!
With a loud gasp, Rayne sat up in bed. She let out a small shriek when her alarm clock went off. Trying to calm down, she quickly turned off her alarm clock. She had promised to go running with Joe, so she quickly got dressed. As she got ready, Rayne thought about her dream. Something had changed – why else would she dream about Frank being in danger?! Tying her shoelaces, Rayne was determined to speak with the Hardy brothers. She thought about telling them of the “the man with the scar—” Rayne felt that this man was somehow involved with the danger. Rayne opened her bedroom door and almost bumped into her father. “Dad – you scared me!” “Sorry, pumpkin – I heard a noise and thought I should check it out.” “I didn’t mean to wake you! I thought I was being quiet – my turn to apologize!” Michael Preston noticed that Rayne was dressed in a sweat shirt and pants. “Where are we off to so early in the morning?” “I promised Joe I’d go running with him. Then he’s going to bring me back home – once I’ve freshened up we’re going out for breakfast.” “I hope he’s going home to ‘freshen up’!” Rayne giggled when her father wrinkled his nose. “He is, don’t worry!” “Before you go – who is this ‘Joe’?” “His name is Joe Hardy, he’s in my Forensic class and he’s also in your American History class! I know for a fact that he loves your class!” “I like him already! Hardy – I’ve heard that name before.” “I know he and his older brother are amateur detectives – I believe they are following in their father’s footsteps.” “Yes! Fenton Hardy – I had heard he had two sons. And Joe is in my class, you say?” “Yes, Tuesday and Thursdays at eight a.m.” Michael paused for a moment, deep in thought. “Ah – blonde hair, broad shoulders – looks like he could be a football player. He is also one of the few students who I notice is awake in my class!” “I told you he loves your class! I have to go now, Dad. Joe will be here any minute now.” Michael gave Rayne a kiss on her cheek. “Don’t forget to warm up first.” “I won’t, bye Dad!” Rayne had just tied her shoe laces when the doorbell rang. She opened the door to find Joe, a huge smile on his face. She pushed him back as she walked out the door. “We need to talk.”
Frank was busy doing his stretching exercises when he saw Joe pull up. He smiled and waved at Rayne, but his smile faded when he saw the serious expression on his brother’s face. “What’s wrong – did something happen at home?” Joe shook his head negatively. “No, but Dad called and said another girl was reported missing. And Rayne had another dream.” “Another dream about you?” “No, this one was about you,” replied Joe. “Me – why me?” Frank turned to look at Rayne. “Before I say what I think the dream is trying to tell me – I need to ask you a question – both of you.” “Okay,” Joe and Frank replied in unison. “Do you know anyone – a man – who has a scar running down his face?” “Oh man,” mumbled Joe as he glanced over at Frank. “Besides the scar – can you describe how he looks?” asked Frank. “No, not really – I don’t see him clearly. I just get images – I can see the scar and he has dark eyes. The eyes scare me – it’s like there’s no life in them! I get a sense that he’s very tall and strong.” “It could be him, Frank. The scar is kind of a giveaway.” “I know, Joe, and if it is Reese – then he definitely is in Bayport!” “And responsible for the missing girls and stolen vehicles.” Frank ran his hand through his hair, then turned to Rayne. “What do you think the dreams mean?” “First tell me who this ‘Reese’ person is.” Frank quickly told her about Daniel Reese and how he and Joe had helped capture and eventually put him behind bars – and that they had learned Reese had escaped from prison. When Frank was finished, Rayne stood quietly digesting the information. “I think – I think he is going to try and get you out of the way, Frank. That way he can go freely after Joe.” ***** Later that afternoon, a group of school children were hiking in a wooded area. They were on a field trip, gathering leaves from the various trees in the area. The teacher was making sure her each child in her class had a buddy so no one would get lost. A park ranger was acting as a guide; the ranger was walking down the trail when he noticed a foot. Moving cautiously over, he was shocked to find a young girl, who appeared to have been beaten badly. The ranger bent over the body and got another shock: the girl was still alive! He heard the children getting closer and got up to stop them. He quietly told the teacher what he had found, and then went back to the girl. Taking out his band radio, he called for an ambulance. The girl let out a moan. “Sshh – you’re safe now – I’ve called for help.” The girl clutched the ranger’s hand; he saw her mouth moving as if she were trying to tell him something. He moved closer, pressing his ear close to her mouth. “F-Frank – Frank Hardy…did…this….”
