CHAPTER 14

The young woman walked into the nondescript office building, her blonde hair falling in waves down her shoulders. The security guard eyed her with suspicion. She wasn’t dressed like most of the people who worked in the building. While everyone else wore dress suits, the young woman was wearing a Bon Jovi concert T-shirt, black jeans that were torn at the knees, a denim jacket and combat boots.

“Excuse me, Miss.”

The young woman let out sigh before she reached inside her pocket and showed the guard her credentials.

“Sorry – should have guessed you were a courier. Have a nice day.” The security guard smiled and sketched a small wave.

She returned the smile as she walked into the elevator. Once the elevator doors were closed, she took out a key and opened a hidden compartment. Inserting the key caused the elevator to descend rapidly down to a sub-subbasement.

The elevator doors opened. When she walked out, the young woman pretended not to notice the stares of the several people in the hallway. She tried not to smirk as she made her way down the hall.

Arriving at her destination, she knocked once and entered.

*****

Seventeen-year-old Joe Hardy rolled lazily onto his stomach, feeling the warm sunshine on his bare back. He was enjoying the last days of his summer vacation at the beach with his brother and friends. This had been the best summer! For once he and Frank didn’t have any cases, and the ones they had helped their father with had not been dangerous.

“AAH!!” Joe cried out as cold water was splashed on him. Turning onto his side he found his pretty girlfriend standing off to the side, a small bucket in her hand. Her ash-blonde hair was pulled back in a ponytail; gray-blue eyes twinkled with laughter.

“You looked a little warm and I thought you needed cooling off!” Vanessa giggled.

“Oh, you’re going to pay for that!” Joe scrambled up and lunged at the young girl.

Dropping the small bucket, Vanessa turned and ran away, with Joe in pursuit. She almost crashed into Frank and Callie as they walked hand in hand along the beach, but swerved at the last moment, managing to avoid them. She could feel the ocean water as the waves softly hit her ankles.

Joe ran past his brother and caught up with Vanessa. He grabbed her around the waist and swung her around. Squealing with laughter when they almost fell into the water, Vanessa leaned back against Joe once he put her feet back on the ground.

Joe kissed her shoulder and was in the process of turning Vanessa around to give her a proper kiss when…

Chet, Biff and Tony had been tossing a Frisbee. Chet had caught the last toss and threw the Frisbee at Tony, but overthrew the disc. Tony ran after the Frisbee and jumped to catch it, not realizing how close he was to Joe and Vanessa.

When Tony landed he lost his balance, falling backwards and into Joe and Vanessa. All three teens fell into the cool water.

Chet and Biff ran over to their friends, laughing uproariously. Biff held out a hand to help Tony up. Chet gave Vanessa a helping hand. Frank and Callie had seen what happened, and came over as well.  Joe was sitting in the water.

“Hey, what am I, chopped liver?!” he pouted, and looked up when he heard a familiar chuckle.

“I’ll help you up, little brother.” Frank held out his hand.

“Thanks, Frank!” Joe gave his older brother a mischievous smile. Taking hold of Frank’s hand, Joe started to rise but at the same time he pulled on his brother’s hand.

“Hey!” Frank let out a startled cry as he found himself in the salty waters.

Not to be outdone, Frank swept his foot out and tripped Joe back into the water. Chet, Biff and Tony were laughing so hard that they didn’t pay attention to Callie and Vanessa. The ash-blonde shoved Chet into Biff while Callie tripped Tony. The two girls quickly scooted out of the way.

“Joe,” said Tony quietly. “I think you’ve been a bad influence on Vanessa!”

“Yeah, she used to be such a sweet girl!” Biff added with a smile.

“I’ll say!” agreed Chet.

All five boys were now standing up; Joe went over to Vanessa and put an arm around her shoulders.

“She is a sweet girl!” Joe kissed Vanessa’s cheek.

Smiling sweetly at the three boys, Vanessa fluttered her eyelashes at them, which made everyone laugh. The group of teens walked back onto the sand, got their towels and began to dry off.

“I don’t know about anyone else, but I could go for a burger!” Chet patted his stomach.

“I’m with Chet,” said Biff. “Let’s go to the Snack Shack.”

The group separated as they went to the changing area. It took the boys ten minutes to change; they waited another twenty for Callie and Vanessa. Chet and Biffed grumbled about why it took girls so long to get dressed. Tony just snickered; Joe and Frank wisely kept quiet.

As they walked to the Snack Shack, no one noticed that someone was watching them.

*****

Click, click, click went the sound of the camera. To all appearances the young man looked like any other tourist. His sandy-brown hair was wind-tossed, his wrap-around sunglasses were sitting on top of his head. He wore a light yellow tank top and blue jean shorts, sandals on his feet.

He had his camera trained on a group of teens that were walking down the boardwalk. The young man took a few more pictures of the dark-haired teen. He then concentrated on the two blonde boys. He knew one of them was his target but wasn’t too sure which one.

His source had told him the second boy was blonde, blue-eyed and stood an even 6’ tall. He needed to get a closer look; he also knew that the young blonde had blue eyes of an unusual shade. He watched as they headed to the Snack Shack.  He placed his camera in his bag and put on his sunglasses, then headed for the restaurant.

Twenty-six-year-old Charlene ‘Charlie’ Manders nee’ McGee,’ stared at the two photos and declined the flight attendent’s offer of a drink. She returned to studying the photo of a young male, eighteen years of age. He had dark brown hair and eyes, and his name was Frank Hardy. The second photo showed a young blonde male, seventeen years of age with blonde hair and blue eyes. His name was Joe Hardy.

Charlie put the photos back into the file folder. She took out a piece of paper and scanned its contents. Too tired to read, Charlie put the information back in the folder. She closed her eyes and her thoughts wandered. She thought about her first encounter with Arthur Gray.

*****

Her parents had been killed by The Shop, a secret government group. The leader of the group, Captain Hollister, had been watching Charlie and her parents ever since her mother and father had been involved in a medical experiment gone wrong in college. After the experiment her parents, Andrew and Vicky McGee, had developed telekinetic powers. When Charlie was born, The Shop had become very interested in her…especially when they found out what she could do.

The Shop had wanted to harness her ability but were concerned that she could not control it. Charlie had been scheduled for termination. But she had escaped and destroyed the compound where she had been held. The destruction of the compound had been hushed up and Charlie went to live with Irv and Norma Manders, an elderly couple that she and her father had met while they were on the run.

Charlie knew that the government was still watching her but keeping its distance. One day she met a nondescript man dressed in gray.

“Hello Charlie – my name is Arthur Gray and I think we can help each other.”
