Laura Hardy was not happy – Fenton had said that it was imperative Frank come with him. As Fenton explained to her why Frank had to come with him, Laura glanced over at Frank. She was hoping that she could talk him into going home. But one look at her oldest son’s face told Laura that there was no way she could get him to do so. She let out a weary sigh as she turned to face her husband. “Try and come back in one piece.” Fenton gazed into her eyes. He saw confidence – love – hope, and fear that she had for him. He pulled her into his arms, hugging her tight. “I promise,” he whispered in her ear. He kissed her cheek and left. As he rode in the back of the van with Frank, Bill kept glancing over at him. “I’m sorry,” he explained, “I’m sorry for helping Mr. Sterling! But he lied to me! He told me that you killed Jason and I believed him!” “Don’t blame yourself. Mr. Baxter, the camp founder – he sent Mr. Sterling several false reports about Jason. I didn’t realize that Baxter had become suspicious of me until I saw a copy of a letter he sent Sterling, claiming that I was supplying Jason with drugs. That’s when I knew it was time to get out of there. I was able to get a message to Joe and then I tried to get hold of Jason. But I was too late….He…they already gave Jason the fatal heroin injection.” Bill rubbed his eyes, trying to wipe away the tears. He looked at Frank, a sad smile on his face. “I’m glad you were there…I’m glad that Jason had a friend in there.” Bill’s words made Frank smile – ever since he found Jason’s body, the older Hardy felt saddened and guilty for the young teen’s death. Though Fenton had told Frank he did the best he could, it was nice to know that someone else felt the same way, and that someone happened to be a person who cared for Jason Sterling. ***** Joe helped Callie out of the trunk of the car and scanned the area where Sterling had taken them. It appeared that Sterling had driven them outside the Bayport city limits. He had brought them to what looked like an abandoned barn. Once Callie was out, Joe automatically placed himself in front of her. Callie was also checking out her surroundings but she was looking at the barn. She was trying to see if there were any hidden cameras. She didn’t see any but wasn’t too sure. “Inside – NOW!”Sterling stepped aside, allowing Joe and Callie to go forward. Joe made sure that his body shielded Callie at all times. His mind was whirling; he didn’t think that Sterling could control both of them. Joe was pondering a way to get the gun away from the older man. As they walked further into the barn, Joe was getting ready to push Callie away when suddenly Sterling raised his arm and slammed the gun against the back of Joe’s head. Hearing the sickening sound of metal hitting flesh, Callie quickly spun around. She let out a scream when Joe fell to the ground, and started to move towards him, only to be stopped by Sterling. “Move away from him; there’s nothing you can do for him!”Callie reluctantly moved away from Joe, keeping a wary eye on the gun. Sterling stuck it in between his belt and then reached for a rope hanging over the stall. “Don’t even think of trying anything funny!” he growled angrily. “Now hold out your hands!” Callie did as she was told; Sterling tied her wrists and then led her away from Joe. He forced Callie to sit down, then tied her legs together and went back to Joe. Nudging Joe’s prone body to make sure he was still unconscious, Sterling hog-tied the younger Hardy. Callie watched with curiosity as Sterling ran a wire across the length of the barn. She couldn’t see what Sterling was doing so she turned her head to try and see where the other end of the wire led. Callie’s eyes went wide with fright when she saw what the wire was attached to. ***** Bill had the rescue party parked a half mile away from the entrance to the barn. Everyone gathered around Chief Collig’s car. “Mr. Sterling has a cable running across the road to let him know if anyone drives in. That’s the only security he has wired, the rest of the area is security-free.” “Were will he have Joe and Callie?” asked Chief Collig. “In the barn, that’s the only building still standing. I know he has a trap set up but he didn’t tell me what.” Bill looked scared as he stared at Frank. “There may be a trip-wire.” Frank’s mouth was set in a grim line. He knew there would definitely be a trip-wire. “What about security cameras?” asked Fenton with concern. “I think so…I’m sorry, Mr. Hardy – Mr. Sterling didn’t go into a lot of detail about this. He kept saying that he didn’t want the cops to find out about me.” Fenton patted the young teen’s back, giving him a reassuring smile. “That’s all right, Bill. You’ve been a really big help to us.” “So what’s our plan?” asked Con, looking to both Fenton and Chief Collig. “Bill, you’re supposed to take me to Sterling, right?” Frank turned to the young man. “Yeah, that’s what I was told to do.” “What did you have in mind, Frank?” Fenton gazed intently at his son. “I was thinking that Chet and Phil could hide in the back of the van. Biff could team up with Con. I figured you and the Chief would team up.” Frank noticed Biff’s disappointed face while Fenton and Chief Collig considered his plan. He squeezed Biff’s shoulder. “There’s not enough room in the back for all three of you and I need Phil and his laptop.” “Yeah, I know,” sighed Biff. “I know Chet will do a great job helping you. I just…I just wanted a chance to pound that Sterling guy for what he did!” Frank smiled at his friend. He knew how Biff felt. “Riley!” Chief Collig called out. “You and Biff stay behind the van and follow it towards the hideout. As soon as you can, veer to the left without being seen! Fenton and I are going to head up this way and hope we don’t run into any security cameras!” “Set your phones on vibrate – if Phil can link into any security cameras he can text message us.” Fenton added.
Raymond Sterling hid up in the barn loft; he knew the battery on his laptop was fully charged. He tapped on his keyboard; anticipation was high as he linked to the two cameras that were outside. “No…no…no!!” Sterling screamed in anger. He closed his laptop and rushed down the ladder. He had to hurry before…it was too late.
“There he is,” said Bill. “I wasn’t sure if he was going to ‘greet’ you or not.” “Looks like he is,” replied Frank.
Fenton and Ezra Collig quickly and quietly made their way through the tall grass. They came upon a large oak tree; Fenton almost stumbled when his foot hit something on the ground. “Fenton, are you all right?” Collig looked with concern at his friend. “Yeah, I’m fine – I tripped over a rock or….” Fenton had bent down to see what had caused his accident. “Hmm – seems Sterling did have a camera waiting for us. Lucky for us it fell out of the tree.” Fenton showed the broken camera to Ezra. They heard an angry chatter and looked up to see a squirrel. “I think we found the culprit,” chuckled Chief Collig. “Thanks buddy!” Fenton dropped the camera back on the ground. The two men then left and spotted the ramshackle barn. With a determined gleam in their eyes, they hurried forward to find Joe and Callie.
