CHAPTER 6

Vanessa remained silent during the drive; she was berating herself for opening the door so quickly. She was afraid of what Joe would think of her – but she had been so happy and excited when Joe had asked her out.

They had become good friends from the moment they first met. Joe had taken her to the movies and out for pizza but it was always with Frank and Callie, or they met up with the rest of the gang. As time went by Vanessa found that her feelings for Joe had changed. And she felt that Joe’s feelings had changed too.

Joe was known as ‘the hugger’ in his family, so Vanessa never thought his hugs meant anything more than being friendly. It wasn’t until one day when, after he hugged her ‘hello’ and took her hand in his that she began to wonder.

It wasn’t until Valentine’s Day that Vanessa knew that Joe’s feelings for her had grown deeper.

Callie had told her that the cheerleading squad raised money by selling candy-grams for Valentine’s Day. She had also told Vanessa not to get her hopes up if Joe sent her one – last Valentine’s Day he had sent a candy-gram to half the sophomore girls!

At ten a.m. the candy-grams were being delivered. Vanessa received one signed by a secret admirer. She received another one at her next class – and again in her fourth period class and on and on throughout the day. It wasn’t until her last class that she found Joe waiting for her at her locker – with a single rose.

“I had a feeling you were my secret admirer,” Vanessa said with a smile.

“You have a secret admirer?” replied Joe. feigning innocence.

Joe glanced over at Vanessa and saw a small smile on her face.

“Penny for your thoughts.”

“Hmm – what?”

“You looked like you were somewhere else – I was wondering what you were thinking about,” he replied with a slight chuckle.

“I was thinking about Valentine’s Day and all those candy-grams you sent me.”

Joe blushed a bright pink. He remembered that day – he had intended to do the same thing he’d done the year before. But when he started to write down who to send the candy-grams to, he found himself writing Vanessa’s name for each one.

“I hope I didn’t cause your dentist bill to go up!”

When Vanessa laughed Joe thought it was the most beautiful sound in the world.  “No it didn’t, although my mom does blame you for the five pounds she gained!”

“Yikes – I’m glad you came out of the house so quickly, then!”

This caused them to laugh again, helping to break the nervousness they had been feeling.

“Hey Van, what you say we skip the movie and have a moonlight picnic instead?”

“I’d say I always knew you were a big romantic and I’d love a moonlight picnic!”

“Now the big question – burgers or chicken?”

“We can’t have both?!” Vanessa exclaimed in a shocked voice.

“Oh,” Joe placed his hand over his heart. “I knew there was a reason I liked you!”

With Vanessa’s laughter ringing in his ears, Joe headed for the nearest Burger Barn, and after that the Chicken Shack.

Frank sat in the theater with Callie by his side. He was barely paying attention to the movie, instead he kept scanning the theater hoping that Callie wouldn’t notice what he was doing. He was worried about Joe.

When Callie had suggested seeing Music and Lyrics, Frank immediately agreed. He knew that this was the movie that Joe had planned to take Vanessa to. But the two teens were nowhere in sight and this was a growing concern for the older Hardy boy.

Callie suppressed a smile when Frank shifted in his seat again. She was well aware that her boyfriend had been searching for Joe and Vanessa. What Frank didn’t know was that Callie was also concerned. She knew that Joe was taking Vanessa to this particular movie; the younger girl had told Callie – with some excitement – about her date with Joe.

Frank shifted again; Callie gently touched his arm and leaned closer to him.  “Why don’t we go look for them,” she whispered.

Taken aback at first, Frank smiled at the pretty blonde girl. He kissed her forehead.

“Thanks,” he whispered in reply.

The two teens quietly left the theater. Holding tightly to Callie’s hand Frank led her back to the van. As he opened the door for Callie, Frank lightly touched her arm.

“Thank you for understanding, and I’m really sorry for cutting the date short.”

“I’m a little worried about them too, and you can make up for it by taking me out to that new fancy seafood restaurant next Saturday night!” Callie said with a smile.

“You got yourself a deal!” Frank replied; after closing the door he went over to the driver’s side and got in. As he drove out of the mall parking lot, Frank wondered: where was his brother?

After purchasing two small burgers, no onions – and a four-piece mix of chicken and two sides – mashed potatoes and cole slaw plus drinks. Joe had wanted to drive down to the beach, but knew that it was too cold, so he drove to a remote area known as ‘The Bluffs’. It was normally a hang-out for college students and a few rowdy high schoolers.

Joe was glad that his mother’s Honda Accord had a sun-roof; there wasn’t a cloud in the sky that night. He could pull back the cover and they could gaze up at the stars in relative warmth.

The car heater on low and the radio station playing softly, Joe and Vanessa sat as close together as possible as they star-gazed.

Joe turned his head, intending to ask Vanessa if she was hungry – at the same moment, Vanessa also turned to look at Joe. The two teens stared into each other’s eyes. Slowly they moved closer, Vanessa closed her eyes when she felt Joe’s lips touch hers. As they kissed, Vanessa was vaguely aware of a song playing on the radio.

Suddenly the car doors opened – Joe and Vanessa were torn apart, each pulled out of the car. When he heard Vanessa scream, Joe reacted immediately. He elbowed his assailant in the ribs, getting a feeling of satisfaction when he heard a grunt of pain.

Vanessa couldn’t believe what was happening; how dare these strangers ruin her date with Joe!?  She stomped down hard on the foot of her assailant.

“AAH! Jeez, Artie, I thought you said they wouldn’t fight back!” screamed a tall, lanky dark-haired young man.

Artie didn’t answer; he was busy trying to fight off Joe. Seeing that his partner was in trouble, the dark-haired man stopped whining and grabbed Vanessa by her hair. When the young girl tried to kick him again, the man slapped her face. He then dragged her towards Artie and Joe.

“Stop it right now or I’ll break her arm!”
