CHAPTER 6

Joe had his arm pulled back, his fist clenched and ready to punch Artie in the face. When he saw that the second man had Vanessa’s arm pinned behind her back, he slowly dropped his arm down to his side.

“Good move, Scott.” Artie shoved Joe against the car.

Scott let go of Vanessa and pushed her towards Joe.

“Are you okay – did he hurt you?” Joe and Vanessa spoke at the same time.

“Aww, how cute!” sneered Artie.

As Joe moved in front of Vanessa, he noticed the unkempt appearance of the two young men.  “What happened to you two?” he asked them.

“We were in a little accident” Scott answered with a smile.

“Yeah, we were being chased by Southport’s finest – and our car landed in a ditch, but we managed to get away!” Artie chuckled gleefully.

“You came from Southport? That’s a long way from here.” Joe was slowly guiding Vanessa away from the two men.

“Why were the police chasing you?” Vanessa asked, trying to distract them.

“Doofus over here….” Scott began when Artie interrupted him.

“Shut up! They don’t need to know! What they need to do is hand over any cash and the keys to the car!”

“The radio is on, Artie – I think the keys are in the car.”

“One down – gimmie your wallet, kid!” Artie held out his hand, glaring at Joe.

The blonde boy hesitated for a second, sizing up the two men and thinking that he could take them. Then he felt Vanessa slip her hand in his and give it a light squeeze. Joe gently caressed the inside of her palm with his thumb. He then slowly raised his right hand.

“My wallet is inside my jacket – I’m going to take it out now,” he calmly told Artie.

As Frank drove to different places he thought Joe might have taken Vanessa, Callie took out her cell phone to turn it back on.

“Of course!” Frank yelled out as he slapped his forehead. “Why didn’t I think of it earlier? Joe’s cell phone – I should just call him on his phone!”

Frank frowned at Callie who was laughing at him. He pulled into the Burger Barn parking lot. Listening impatiently to Joe’s ringing phone, Frank let out a sigh of relief when someone answered.

“Hello?”

“Mom – why are you answering Joe’s phone?”

“Probably because your brother left it on top of his dresser! Is something wrong?”

“No – I just thought Joe and Vanessa would like to join us for a slice of pizza.” Frank cringed, he hated to lie to his mother and he hoped that she didn’t hear any changes in his voice.

“When Joe realizes he forgot his phone, I’m sure he’ll call home, and when he does I’ll give him your message.”

“Okay, thanks Mom, bye.”

Ending the call Frank stared forlornly at his phone. Callie smoothed back his hair.

“Don’t worry Frank, let me try Vanessa’s phone.”  She gave him a reassuring smile while she dialed the number, but it soon turned into a frown when Vanessa’s voice mail came on.

A tapping on his window caused Frank to jump in fright. He turned to find the smiling face of Biff Hooper.

“How was the chick flick?” Biff asked when Frank rolled down his window.

“The part that we saw was pretty good.”

Noting the confused look on Biff’s face, Callie filled him in about the missing Hardy brother.

“He probably went to a later showing – I saw him go through the drive-thru about an hour ago.”

“Are you sure it was Joe?”

“I know your mom’s gold Honda! Plus, as I was heading for the Burger Barn, Vanessa gave me a shout out.”

Relief showed on Frank’s face. “Thanks Biff – I should have known Joe would want to eat first!”

“I’m feeling a little hungry myself – why don’t we skip the movie. It looks like Joe and Vanessa can take care of themselves.” Callie said with a laugh.

*****

After giving Artie his wallet, Joe and Vanessa watched as the two men drove away leaving them stranded. Knowing they had a long walk ahead of them, Joe held Vanessa’s hand as he led her down the hill.

“Well – at least they let us keep our coats,” sighed Vanessa. She stared down at her boots, a sad expression on her face.

Joe saw the sad look on Vanessa’s face and felt terrible.

“Those jerks – I can’t believe they ruined our date like that!” she fumed.

“I’m really sorry, Vanessa – this wasn’t how I wanted our date to end up!”

Vanessa came to a stop and looked incredulously at Joe. “I’m not accepting that apology because this was not your fault! Unless you’re psychic and knew it was going to happen!”

“No,” laughed Joe.

“Well, there you go!”

“It’s just – you looked so sad awhile ago.” Joe sighed dejectedly.

Vanessa pointed down to her boots. “These look good but they’re definitely not made for a long walk!”

Joe glanced down at his loafers and smiled. “I know what you mean. At least we’ve got warm coats!”

Not wanting to be late for his date, Joe had grabbed the first thing he saw, which happened to be his Bayport High sports jacket. Joe and Vanessa continued walking down the dirt road. They were coming up on a darkened section, there were trees lining both sides of the dirt road. Although they had a small amount of light from the full moon, it wasn’t strong enough to penetrate the wooded area. Joe and Vanessa quickened their steps, both wanting to go through this part as fast as possible.

Vanessa was feeling playful and started to jog; because he was still holding her hand Joe soon followed suit to keep up. Glancing over at Joe, Vanessa decided to tease him.

“Aww come on, you can do better than that! I thought you were the fastest sprinter at Bayport High?!”

Although he couldn’t see her face that well, Joe knew that Vanessa was grinning. He quickened his pace and let go of her hand. Letting out a squeal, Vanessa tried to keep up with Joe.

Joe didn’t see the large rock that was imbedded in the dirt; he stubbed his toe on it and lost his balance. He let out a cry as he fell and tumbled the rest of the way down the uphill road and into a small ditch.

Vanessa heard Joe cry out, and called his name. She almost fell when she stepped onto the rock, but managed to catch her balance.

“Joe – Joe! Where are you, Joe!?”

“Over here – watch out for the rock!” Joe called out. He sat on the ground holding onto his right ankle.

“Joe?”

“Over here Vanessa, I’m at the bottom of the ditch.”

Soon Vanessa was kneeling by his side.

“Are you hurt?” she asked with concern.

“I twisted my ankle – at least I hope that’s all I did!”

While Vanessa tried to look over Joe’s ankle….

Artie and Scott finished eating the burgers and chicken that Joe had purchased. The two men stopped to buy some beer but decided to rob the convenience store instead. A rookie officer had pulled up when Artie and Scott ran out of the store, the store manager chasing after them. A car chase soon began.

As the Honda Accord sped through a red light an oncoming eighteen-wheeler was already going through the intersection and couldn’t stop. The Accord was broadsided; the impact crushed the small car.

*****

Sergeant Con Riley was coming off duty when he heard the call for the robbery. When the license plate was called in, Con felt a chill when he heard who the owner was.

“RILEY!” Chief Collig opened his door and stood in shock.

“Right here, Chief!”

“I want you to go out and make sure that really is Mrs. Hardy’s vehicle. If it is – make sure she’s not hurt, I’m calling Fenton.”

“Yes sir.”

Chief Collig sat down at his desk; he sighed as he dialed the Hardys’ number. He hoped that Laura Hardy was unharmed – he prayed that the car was just stolen and she hadn’t been anywhere near – Ezra knew that if anything had happened to Laura, Fenton wouldn’t survive the loss.
