THE CHAPTERS |
Andrea Bender was beside herself with worry. Vanessa was an hour late past her curfew. Andrea stared at the phone; she started to reach for it but turned and walked away. Five more minutes, she’d wait five more minutes before calling the Hardys. She walked into the kitchen and began to make a pot of coffee. While she waited for the coffee, Andrea wished that she hadn’t let Vanessa go out with Joe. She liked the young boy well enough but she worried about what his father did for a living. A young girl had already been murdered because of…Andrea gave herself a mental shake. She wasn’t being fair, that wasn’t Joe’s fault…but it still didn’t make her fear for Vanessa’s safety any less. Glancing at her watch Andrea saw that she still had two minutes left, when the phone suddenly rang. ***** There were several back roads that led up to the Bluffs. Frank took one that was well traveled. He had passed a car or two and wondered if they saw the carjacking. “I don’t think Joe would take Vanessa here,” Tony said from the back of the van. “Why not? This is where everybody goes!”“That’s exactly why he wouldn’t – he would want to go somewhere more intimate!” the Italian youth tried to explain. Callie turned around to get a better look at Tony. “Why do I get the feeling that you know just the place?!” she said in a teasing tone. Tony gave Callie a huge grin. “You could say that!”“I should have known,” Frank chuckled. “Okay, where to?”“It’s going to be a little tricky; you’re going to have go back where we started from. Think you can make a U-turn?” “Joe isn’t the only one who knows how to drive!” Frank practically growled. With expert ease, Frank made a successful U-turn. Tony leaned forward as he gave the older Hardy brother directions. ***** Joe jerked up and winced – he hadn’t realized he’d fallen asleep until he heard a noise that wakened him. The young teen thought he heard a car horn. Joe stared up at the sky, wondering why there were trees in his room. Then he remembered tripping and falling down into the ditch. Taking a deep breath, Joe smelled a sweet citrus scent. He looked down, and a small smile flitted across his face. Vanessa’s head rested on his shoulder, as she slept peacefully. Joe smoothed back her hair. Shifting slightly Vanessa opened her eyes; she slowly sat up and smiled down at Joe. “I can’t believe I fell asleep!” “If it makes you feel any better – so did I!”“How’s your ankle – is it still sore?”Joe started to sit up; Vanessa knelt closer to check his ankle. Joe let out a hiss when she touched it. “It still looks really swollen.” Joe bit his lower lip trying to think of how to get out of their situation. He knew that Vanessa wasn’t going to like his plan. “Vanessa – I know you said you wanted to stay here with me but – I thought I heard a car. I think you should try and go get help.” “What if it’s those two jerks?” she asked worriedly. “I don’t think so. They’re long gone by now.” Vanessa began twirling a small lock of her hair as she thought what to do. “Help me up – I’m sure I can make it this time.” Before Joe could start to get up, Vanessa gently placed her hand on his shoulder. “No – I’ll go. You stay right were you are. I promise I won’t be long.” She kissed him lightly on the cheek and then started up the slope. ***** Frank was driving up the hill leading to the remote spot that Joe and Vanessa had been when he heard Biff’s car horn. Biff glared over at Chet. “Will you stop fooling around?”“Sorry, I was trying to see what was on the other side!”“That’s what I’m doing; you stay on your side!” Biff let out a sigh. “I’m sorry, Chet – I’m just worried about Joe and Vanessa.” “I know – so am I.” Frank stopped the van when he came to a clearing. He got out of the vehicle and opened the back doors. Rummaging through a tool chest, he found a flashlight. Tony held the flashlight that he found in the back room of the Pizzeria. “This looks like where the car was parked,” said Frank as he pointed out the flattened grass. Tony aimed his light towards the spot that Frank indicated. He watched as the dark-haired boy walked slowly about, searching the ground. “Hey Frank, I think I found something!” Biff yelled out, kneeling down on the ground. “What did you find?” Frank placed his hand on Biff’s shoulder. “I think I found a footprint.” Getting a closer look, Frank patted Biff on the back. “Way to go, Biff!” “But where are they? If they had to walk, why didn’t we see them?!” asked Callie with concern. “What if they got hurt?” Chet looked worriedly at Frank. “Let’s follow the footprints and see where they lead,” the older Hardy suggested. “Why don’t I drive back down to the bottom of the road? That way if it looks like Joe and Vanessa went all the way down I can drive you back to the van.” “Good idea, Biff!” Frank smiled at his friend.
Vanessa slowly made her way up the incline. Every now and then she would look down and try to see Joe. She was glad that he hadn’t tried to climb up with her. Several times she almost lost her balance, due to a rock or an exposed root. The only good thing about the climb was that it was helping her keep warm. A smile flitted across Vanessa’s face as she thought about Joe. She had a feeling that being with him was going to ensure her life was never going to be boring! Vanessa looked up and saw that she was near the top, but she suddenly lost her footing, and found herself tumbling down the incline. Vanessa let out a surprised scream. Joe heard Vanessa’s scream; he tried to get up but the pain in his ankle was too severe. Gritting his teeth, he managed to stand up, putting all of his weight on his left leg. He started to hobble up the incline when Vanessa came crashing down on him. He cried out when her body hit his hurt ankle. He fell flat on his face, with Vanessa now lying underneath his legs. Joe slowly rolled onto his side and looked over at Vanessa, who was lying on her back. “I never had a girl fall for me that way!” Joe said, a teasing smile on his face. The young girl let out a groan and then started to laugh. “Are you okay – did you get hurt?” asked Joe in a serious tone. “The only thing hurt is my pride! And maybe my…uh, never mind!” Joe snorted with laughter, Vanessa soon joined him. As Biff drove his car down the hill, he though he heard someone scream. He wasn’t sure – the sound was muffled due to his window being up. Frank walked carefully, following the footprints. He stopped when he heard a scream.
