CHAPTER 12

The brothers had picked up Callie first and then Joe drove to the Bender home. While Joe got out of the van to get Vanessa, Frank turned around to face Callie. So far she and Joe were being civil toward each other.

“Callie, Joe has already promised me to be on his best behavior with you and I hope that you’ll do the same with Joe.”

“I was wondering why he was being so nice.”

Frank opened his mouth to ask Callie if she blamed Joe for Iola’s death but he didn’t get a chance. Joe had opened the side door to let Vanessa in.

“Hi Callie – nice outfit!”

“Thanks – love your earrings!”

Frank and Joe smiled at each other as they listened to the girls for awhile.

“So whose turn is it to choose a movie?” Joe asked as he drove into the mall parking lot.

“We’ve been going boy/girl and Callie chose last time so you’re up next, Joe.” Vanessa replied as Callie let out a groan.

Hearing Callie, Joe was tempted to pick a movie with lots of action and car chases with little dialogue.

“How about that new comedy with Ben Stiller, Night at the Museum!”

“I heard that’s a great movie!” Vanessa smiled at Joe.

Callie was about to make a comment but caught Frank’s eye and kept quiet. The four teens got out of the van and headed for the movie theater. They had just missed one showing but found that the next show was still early enough for them to make it home before curfew.

“We have enough time to get something to eat. Let’s go up to the food court.” Frank suggested.

“Let’s go to the Pizzeria; I think Tony is working tonight.”

Frank took Callie’s hand and led her towards the escalators. Joe and Vanessa followed behind them. The Pizzeria was one of the few enclosed restaurants at the mall. Frank opened the door for Callie and Vanessa.

“Well, if it isn’t the lovebirds! Vanessa, why are you hanging out with him? Everyone knows I’m better looking!” Biff teased his good friend.

Vanessa threw her arms around Joe as she smiled coyly at Biff.

“In your dreams, Hooper! Joe is way better looking than you!”

Biff scooted over to let Vanessa and Joe sit in the booth. Chet sat across from him, laughing at the bantering between Biff and Vanessa. Chet moved aside so that Frank and Callie could join them.

“Did you guys order already?” Callie asked the two guys.

“No, only been here long enough to give Tony our drink orders.” Biff answered.

Tony, having seen the Hardys walk in, brought two pitchers of root beer to the table along with glasses.

“Hey guys! So what’ll it be tonight?”

Callie had to admit that Joe’s movie choice was a good one. She had really enjoyed the show. Now Frank and Vanessa were waiting outside of the theater for Joe and Callie, both of whom had to use the facilities. Frank checked his watch and frowned; they sure were taking a long time.

“I wonder what’s keeping Joe?” asked Vanessa.  Frank could hear the worried tone in her voice.

“I don’t know. Why don’t we check? You go check on Callie and I’ll check on Joe.”

“Okay, that sounds like a reasonable idea.”

Luckily Vanessa knew the girl working the ticket counter and they were allowed back in to search for Joe and Callie.

When Frank went into the men’s room he suddenly had a bad feeling. There was no one else in the room. Where was his brother?

When Vanessa walked into the ladies; she didn’t see anything unusual. She pushed open the stalls to see if Callie had gotten ill and was too weak to come out. It was when she opened the last stall that she started to feel scared.

Frank walked out of the men’s room hoping that Vanessa had better luck than he had.

“Frank!”

He quickly turned around to find a very frightened-looking Vanessa running towards him. She was holding something in her hand.

“I found this in the last stall – it was stuffed inside the trash can.”

Vanessa held up Callie’s purse.

Joe woke up to find that his head was pounding. The last thing he remembered was walking into the men’s room and accidentally bumping into a huge gorilla of a man.

He tried to move and found that his body wasn’t obeying his commands. That’s when he realized he had been tied up. Joe heard a noise and found out that he wasn’t alone. He slowly turned his head to find Callie lying next to him.

Callie blinked a few times; when she opened her eyes she found herself in a dark room. If her mouth hadn’t been taped shut she would have screamed when she saw another body lying next to her. It took her a second to realize that the body was Joe.

He wanted so badly to tell her everything would be okay, but whoever had kidnapped them had put duct tape over his mouth as well. Joe didn’t know how long they had been in the room - but he was fairly sure that Frank would be worrying and wondering where they were.

Frank stood with his arm around Vanessa’s shoulder, trying to comfort her. Officer Con Riley was taking their statement when Fenton and Laura came striding over.

“Frank, what happened?”

“I don’t know, Dad! We had pizza and then went to the movie. Joe and Callie had to use the restroom. Vanessa and I were waiting for them outside. They never came out.”

“Vanessa, does your mother know you’re still here?” asked Laura with concern.

“Yes, I called her – she’s on her way over here.”

“Mr. Hardy, although the men’s and ladies’ rooms are on opposite ends of the theater, they are both located near an exit.”

“So whoever took them could have gone out those exits?”

“Yes sir.” Con felt awful, he really liked the Hardy family. Suddenly Andrea Bender arrived.

“Vanessa honey, are you all right?”

Vanessa threw herself in her mother’s arms. “I’m fine – it’s Joe and Callie! They’re missing!”

Con told Andrea that she could take Vanessa home. Not wanting Frank to drive, Laura took him home while Fenton drove the van.

Questions swirled in Frank’s head – who took Joe and Callie – why did they take them?
