CHAPTER 12

Frank grabbed a light jacket as he went out the door. Laura saw her son coming down the stairs.

“Where are you going, Frank?”

“I need some air – I’m going to ride my bike for awhile.” Frank mumbled. He didn’t want to let his mother know what he intended to do.

But he didn’t fool her; Laura Hardy hadn’t been married to a great detective and lived with two boys who were growing up to be just like him, not to know when one of them was up to something. As Frank opened the door, Laura reached out and touched his shoulder.

“Just be careful.”

Frank turned and gave his mother a hug.

Laura stood in the hallway staring at the closed door. She let out a small sigh as she turned to go back into the kitchen.

“Oh Gertrude – you startled me!” Laura placed her hand over her chest.

“You know very well he’s not going out for fresh air!” Aunt Gertrude snapped at her sister-in-law.

“Yes I know, but what did you want me to do? Short of tying him to his bed he would have found a way to leave.”

Aunt Gertrude’s angry scowl softened when she saw how sad Laura was. Putting her arm around the younger woman’s shoulders she led Laura to the kitchen.

“I’ve made us some tea – I had a feeling we were going to need it.”

Phil Cohen sat on top of the picnic table waiting patiently for his friends. His thoughts wandered to Frank’s phone call. The urgency in his friend’s voice caused him to worry. Although Frank hadn’t said anything, Phil knew that the call had something to do with Joe. Had there been an accident – had Vanessa been hurt as well?

“Yo, Phil – earth to Phil!”

Phil blinked a few times and found Tony and Biff smiling at him. Tony had been waving his hand in front of his face.

“Where’d you go, Phil?” chuckled Tony.

Pushing his glasses back, Phil smiled somewhat sheepishly at his two friends.  “I was just wondering what Frank wants to talk to us about.”

Biff’s face became somber. “Yeah, me too. We saw him last night.”

“Didn’t he and Joe take the girls out to the movies?” asked Tony.

“Do you think something happened afterwards?” wondered Phil.

“Oh man, I hope nothing happened to Joe!” Biff said with dismay.

“What makes you think it’s Joe? What if Vanessa or Callie got sick or hurt?” Tony looked at his two buddies.

“Come on, Tone,” said Biff, “How many times have we gathered here because Joe got hurt or worse – kidnapped!”

“Trouble does seem to follow Joe, doesn’t it?” lamented Phil.

All three young men grew silent – each wishing this was one time that trouble left Joe alone.

A few minutes later Chet arrived – Vanessa and Frank followed soon after. As Frank scanned the faces of his friends he knew that he could count on them for their help.

“I guess you’re wondering why I asked you here. Last night after the movie Joe and Callie were kidnapped. The police think they took them out the back entrance where the restrooms are at.”

“Callie – they took Callie? But why – why take her?” asked Chet.

“Have there been any ransom demands?” Biff questioned Frank.

“No ransom demands have been made and we don’t know why they took Callie.”

“Frank,” Phil spoke softly. “What if…what if they meant to take Vanessa?”

Frank was stunned – he hadn’t thought of that possibility. He wondered if his father had thought of it.

The man in white stepped aside as another large goon entered the room. Joe recognized the second goon as being the gorilla he had bumped into in the men’s room. Figuring that the man in white was in charge, Joe theorized that he had to be Mr. Casidine.

“What exactly do you want with us, Mr. Casidine?” Joe smirked when he saw the surprised expression on Mr. Casidine’s face.

Casidine recovered quickly as he smiled down at Joe. “Very good, Mr. Hardy, and here I was told that your brother was the smart one. Apparently you’re not just a dumb jock!”

With a slight nod of his head, Jax (who Joe thought of as the gorilla) picked Joe up. Simon “the Hulk” threw Callie over his shoulder as if she were a sack of potatoes. The two men waited for Mr. Casidine and then followed him down a long hallway. They finally came to a stop; Mr. Casidine took a key out of his pocket and unlocked the door. Simon set Callie down in a chair.

“Don’t try anything funny or your friend over there gets a real bad hurt – ya got me?”

Callie glared at Simon as she gave him a nod. The muscled man then untied Callie’s hands only to bind her wrists to the armrests of the chair. He got down on one knee and tied her legs to the chair as well. Simon looked over at Jax and gave him a nod to let his partner know he was done. Jax in turn set Joe down in the second chair and went through the same process.

“A little change of plans, my young Mr. Hardy.”

It was almost dinner time when Frank finally arrived home. He put his motor bike in the garage and then walked dejectedly to the front door. He found a small package on the front step. Frank was about to pick it up when he noticed that it was wrapped in a plain brown wrapper. There was no stamp or signature as to who delivered the package. Stepping over the small box, Frank opened the door.

“Dad, I think you better come look at this!”

Aunt Gertrude heard Frank calling; she walked over to the door.

“You’re father went to speak with Chief Collig. What’s that – I didn’t hear the delivery man ring the doorbell.”

“Don’t touch it Auntie, I don’t think it came from a delivery service. Get hold of Dad – it’s just as well he’s with the Chief. I think Chief Collig should be here too.”

“You believe it’s from the kidnappers?” Laura had heard the exchange between Frank and Gertrude.

“Yeah, I do.”

Five minutes later, Fenton, Chief Collig and a forensic team had arrived at the Hardy home. Frank had wanted to call the Shaws but Laura stopped him.

“What if it’s not what you think it is – you wouldn’t want to give them any false hope would you?”

“The package is clean, Chief. There are no prints on it or the DVD disc case.”

“Thanks, Lt. Simmons – they must have worn gloves.”

Fenton agreed as he took the DVD. “Well, let’s see if Joe is on this thing.”

Fenton led Chief Collig into the house. Laura, Frank and Aunt Gertrude were waiting for them in the living room. Frank got the DVD player ready and Fenton put the disc in. Sitting next to his wife, Fenton held her hand as they watched the TV screen. The image was a little blurry, then it came into focus – and the group could now see Joe and Callie.

“I’m supposed to tell you that we haven’t been harmed…” Joe winced as if he had been hit.  “Like I said – we haven’t been harmed. Our safety depends on you, Dad. Do as they say and Callie and I won’t be hurt.”

Suddenly the screen went black and then another person was on the screen. He wore a white fedora and wraparound sunglasses on his face. When Mr. Hardy saw him, he slowly stood up.

“Casidine!” Fenton growled angrily.
