CHAPTER 12

Fenton Hardy knew he was walking into a trap, so it was no surprise when heard Arthur Gray’s voice on the phone.

After viewing the DVD, Fenton had left with Chief Collig to analyze the disc. Fenton thought he had seen something in the background and wanted to have a better look at it. As he drove his car to the police station his cell phone rang. Not recognizing the caller number, Fenton wondered if Jared Casidine had somehow gotten his cell number.

“Hello, Hardy speaking.”

“Fenton, I’m calling to tell you to leave Casidine alone.”

“I can’t do that, Arthur – he has my son.”

“Frank – he kidnapped Frank?”

“No, he has Joe! He also took a young girl – her name is Callie Shaw…”

“Callie Shaw – I thought she was dating Frank!”

“She is – Frank has a theory that she was taken by mistake. He thinks Casidine meant to take Vanessa – Vanessa Bender, she’s the girl Joe is dating but I guess you already know that.”

“Fenton – I’m sorry about Joe but you can’t get involved!”

“Somehow I doubt your sincerity, Arthur. If you think that I’m going to stay away – think again!”

Fenton snapped his phone shut and threw it on the passenger seat in disgust. After his conversation with the Gray Man, Fenton was bound and determined to find his son and bring down Jared Casidine!

Joe stared at Casidine in disbelief – then his face clouded with anger.

“I didn’t kill anyone! That coward chose to kill himself rather than to face the consequences of his actions! I tried to save him, but he chose to die!”

Letting out a snarl, Jax quickly strode over to Joe and punched him in the face.

“Leave him alone!” Callie screamed as he swung his arm back to hit him again, and Casidine grabbed his henchman by his wrist.

“That will be enough, Jax – you should never insult someone’s hero, Joe.” Casidine scolded the young teen.

“Maybe he should get a better hero to admire!”

Casidine laughed as he pushed Jax away, giving the man a steely glare.

“You really are a stubborn fellow aren’t you? I wouldn’t get on Jax’s bad side – he might get some pleasure when we get rid of you.”

Joe glanced over at Callie and saw the fear on her face. Not wanting to show his fear, he gave her a small smile, hoping to reassure her.

“Well,” sighed Casidine. “I must go now – have to get ready for our guest.”

He signaled to his men to leave – as Jax walked past Joe he paused for a second, making sure that Mr. Casidine had left the room. Looking down at Joe, an evil grin flitted across the henchman’s face.

“Joe!” Callie screamed as she struggled in her chair.

Jax had swung out with his left hand and smacked Joe on the side of the head so hard that his chair tipped over and he fell to the floor.

Joe winced in pain when he hit the hard floor; his shoulder and face ached. He heard Jax’s laughter as he walked out the door. Only one thing made his assault worthwhile: as he hit the floor, Joe heard the chair crack.

Frank was frustrated. He had wanted to go with Fenton down to the police station, but his father had insisted he stay home. Taking his cell phone out of his jeans pocket, Frank went outside. He was about to call Phil when his cell began to chirp.

“Hi Frank, I didn’t want to tie up your phone line. Have you heard anything?”

“Hi Vanessa – yes we have. Someone sent us a DVD.”

Vanessa sensed something in Frank’s tone.  “What’s wrong – are Joe and Callie – are they hurt?”

“No – they looked fine – it’s just”….*sigh*…..”Vanessa, how much – how much do you know about Iola and how she died?”

“ I’ve heard the rumors – Joe told me everything – I know some terrorist group was responsible.”

“Yeah – The Assassins – that’s what they call themselves. Vanessa, what you don’t know is – this group – they have a bounty out on Joe.”

“A bounty? A bounty for what?!”

“They blame Joe for killing one of their leaders – Al-Rousasa. Van – the Assassins have them – they kidnapped Joe and Callie.”

Vanessa slowly sank down to her knees – she could hear Frank calling her name. Although Joe didn’t go into details about the Assassins, what he did tell her was enough for the young teen to know that her boyfriend and best friend might not come back alive.

“Joe, are you okay?”

“I’ve been better.”

Callie couldn’t help but laugh; she never could understand how Joe could find humor in anything. His shoulder ached but Joe didn’t think he had broken any bones when he fell. He moved his arm and felt the armrest move.

“Yes!” Joe cheered as moved he stretched his arm out. Callie let out a gasp when she saw what Joe had done. It took some effort but the young teen managed to roll the chair onto its back. He then slid his bound wrist down the broken armrest. Joe smiled triumphantly at Callie – he had one arm free!

“Now the fun part,” he commented as he began to attempt to untie his left arm.

Callie kept glancing between the door and Joe. She strained to hear if anyone was approaching the room. Keeping his concentration on what he was doing, Joe worked frantically to loosen the rope tied around his wrist. Although the rope was bound tight, the knot was not, and he soon had both arms free. He couldn’t untie his legs lying on his back; taking a deep breath Joe attempted to roll back onto his side. It took a few tries but he finally did it. It didn’t take long for him to untie his legs. He stretched his legs and slowly got up off the floor. Joe hurried over to Callie and began to get her loose.

“I guess gorilla-boy didn’t think you would be any trouble,” said Joe as he easily untied Callie.  “He didn’t tie these very tight.”

“I’m glad he thought I was such a helpless female!”

Now it was Callie’s turn to stretch out the kinks in her muscles. Joe went over to the broken chair and picked up the armrest.

“So what do we do now – how are we going to get out of here?” asked Callie.

“I’m fairly sure the door is locked – at least they didn’t take my wallet. I can probably use my library card to get the door open. Then we need to find my cell phone.”

“To call Frank and the police?”

“Yeah, and to activate the tracking device Phil installed in there.”

“Phil did what – you actually have a tracking device in your cell phone?!”

Joe smiled. “Yeah, Frank asked him to come up with a way to track me down after the last time I was kidnapped.”

“Then why hasn’t Frank used it now?”

“Because I have to call him first – he has to receive a signal from my phone.”

“When we got out of this mess – remind me to tell Phil to invent a better tracking signal! One that doesn’t involve you calling in first!”

Joe had been working to open the door. He smiled at Callie’s comment. His smile grew when he heard the door click open.
