CHAPTER 12

Finishing her call with Frank, Vanessa convinced her mother to let her drive over to the Hardy home. She didn’t know what she was going to do, but the young girl felt a need to be there.

As she pulled up to the front curb, another car pulled up behind her. Vanessa had heard the car before she saw it. As she got out of her car, she quickly covered her ears. The light yellow ’37 Packard had been a beauty in its heyday. The long front hood gave it a sleek body – the running board along the side helped the fashionable ladies and gentlemen keep their shoes dry when they got in and out of the car. It seated two comfortably….however, the car seemed to shake from side to side just before a loud bang resounded in the air. A billow of black smoke rose up from the back.

“Chet, I thought you said you put in new shocks!” Biff placed his hands behind his waist and stretched his back.

“I did – I got them off another Packard over at the junkyard.”

Biff let out a groan as he made his way carefully up the front lawn. He turned when he heard a giggle and saw Vanessa.

“You wouldn’t be laughing if you just rode in that thing!” Biff moaned.

“Did Frank call you to come help too?” Chet asked as he ignored Biff’s complaints.

“He called me, but he didn’t mention needing help.” Vanessa looked questioningly at the two boys.

The front door opened and Frank walked out of the house with Phil.  “Vanessa, what are you doing here?” he asked in surprise.

“I couldn’t stay at home – I want to help, and don’t try and tell me you aren’t trying to look for Joe!”

“Okay,” said Frank with a smile. “I won’t – Phil has an idea. I hope you don’t mind riding out to the mall. Tony is going to meet us there.”

Biff let out another groan before he turned and walked back to Chet’s car.

Putting a finger up to his lips to signal Callie to stay quiet, Joe cautiously opened the door. He opened it wide enough to see if anyone was nearby. Not seeing anyone he swung the door wider and motioned to Callie to follow him. He was surprised when she took hold of his hand. Joe turned, gave Callie a small smile and squeezed her hand reassuringly.

Staying close to the wall, the two teens walked as quietly and quickly as possible down the hallway. Joe was concerned that there were no other doorways – what if they met up with Casidine or his two gorillas? Where would he and Callie hide? He almost breathed a sigh of relief when they finally came upon a closed door.

Signaling to Callie to stay quiet, Joe placed his hand on the doorknob and turned it. Finding that the door was not locked, he cautiously pushed it open. The lights were off. Listening intently for any strange noises - and not hearing any - Joe and Callie went inside. There was a small window that let in some sunlight. Once he was accustomed to the dark room, Joe saw a desk in the middle of the room, holding a small lamp. He also saw something that gave him hope – his cell phone!

Hurrying over to the desk, Joe flipped open the phone and smiled when he saw that the battery was still charged.

Ezra Collig glared at his long time friend; he had been trying to convince Fenton to let an undercover officer go in his place.   “Fenton, you know as well as I do this is a setup!”

“True, and I also know that Casidine isn’t going fall for a trick like that,” Fenton argued back.

Ezra drummed his fingers on his desk as he continued to glare at Fenton.  “And you’re still dead-set against having some of my men cover you?” he sighed.

“Ezra – Casidine would spot them….”

“Are you trying to tell me that this Casidine is that good – that he would be able to spot my best men?!”

“Yes – he is that good!”

“I don’t care – you won’t take any of my men but you’re not going to prevent me from being there!”

“I’m glad to hear you say that – with Sam out of town on another case, there isn’t another man I would want with me,” replied Fenton with a smile.

Taking pity on Biff, Phil offered to drive him and Chet to the mall – Frank suggested Vanessa could go with him in the van. He had come to a stop at an intersection when his cell phone rang.

“It’s Joe!” Frank exclaimed as he simultaneously hit the pound and the send button. He had activated the tracking device.

“Joe – Joe are you all right – how is Callie?!”

“We’re...kay…llie…fine….”

Frank strained to hear his brother but there was too much interference – he heard a lot of static and then nothing.

“Joe! JOE! Aaah!!!” the older Hardy screamed his frustration.

“What happened – what did Joe say? Are they all right?!”

“Calm down, Vanessa! He – I think he was fine.”

“What do you mean you think?!”

“It was a bad connection – I just hope it doesn’t affect Phil’s tracking device!”

The sounds of car horns caused Frank to realize that the light had changed. He drove onward and pulled into the first parking space he found.

“What’s Frank doing?” asked Biff as he looked at Phil.

“I don’t know but he looks pretty agitated,” Phil replied as Frank jumped out of the van and walked towards his Ford Corolla. He rolled the window down as Frank got closer.

“Phil, Joe called but it was a bad connection! Can we still track him?”

“Chet – my laptop!” Phil jumped out of the car followed by Biff and Chet.

Placing the laptop on the hood of the car, Phil’s fingers flew across the keyboard. A slow grin flitted across his face when a faint blinking red dot appeared on the screen.

“Got him!”

“Why is the light so faint? Shouldn’t it be brighter?” Frank stared worriedly at Phil.

“He might be a few miles out of the radius or it could be because of the connection.”

“Well which is it?!” shrieked Vanessa.

Putting his hands on her shoulders, Frank squeezed gently. “Easy Van – I know you’re worried about Joe and Callie. So am I – I’m sure Phil can figure a way for us to still find them.”

“And you can bet I will,” Phil promised.

*****

“Frank – Frank are you there? Hello – hello?”

“Joe what’s wrong – did you talk to Frank?”

“Yeah – he answered but then I lost him!”

Callie’s eyes shone with fear and worry as she stared at Joe. She blinked tears that threatened to spill.

“Do you – do you think they’ll find us?”

“I don’t know,” replied Joe fearfully. He drew in a deep breath and a determined look came over his features.

“I know one thing – we need to get out of here.”
