CHAPTER 12

Jax didn’t believe Joe when he told him that he and the blonde girl had split up. He had a feeling that she was close by but he didn’t have time to look for her. He needed to get the Hardy kid to the rendezvous point. Grabbing Joe’s arm, Jax shoved the gun against his side.

“Start moving and no funny stuff kid!”

“I don’t do funny….Cute maybe, but not funny!” Joe replied as he glanced down the alley.

Callie figured that Joe would have Frank’s cell number on speed dial. Knowing how close the brothers were, she pressed the number one.

“Just like Frank,” mumbled Callie as she heard the first ring.

Vanessa was now riding in the back of the van while Con Riley rode up front with Frank. Tony had managed to join his friends, and was now riding in Phil’s car with Chet and Biff. Con held Phil’s laptop on his lap, giving Frank directions as he monitored the red dot. The chirping of Frank’s phone almost caused the police officer to drop the laptop.

Frank quickly reached for the phone, which he had placed inside the cup holder.

“Joe – where are you? How is Callie?”

“Frank, it’s Callie!”

“Callie, are you okay – where’s Joe?”

“I’m fine – Joe – they have him, Frank! Joe got caught.”

While Callie spoke with Frank, she was crawling out of her hiding space, causing some of the boxes to fall down.

“Callie – what was that noise – what’s going on?”

“That was me, Joe had me boxed in fairly well.” Callie chuckled, “never mind, I’ll explain later.”

“Do you know where you’re at?”

“There are a lot of abandoned buildings – it looks like a few shops are still operating but they’ve already closed for the day.”

Callie began walking back towards the alley she and Joe had originally come from. She stopped in front of empty store; there was a “For Lease” sign on the window. There was something else that she saw on the window.

“Frank, do you have a pen?”

Going in through a back door, Jax shoved Joe back inside the office building.

“What – we’re not going back up the stairs? I thought you were in better shape?!”

“Shut up, kid!” Jax snarled as he rang for the elevator. He pushed Joe into the elevator then hit the fifth floor button.

“Sooo – why are we going back up? I thought we had to meet up with your boss?”  Joe waited for a reply; when none came he tried again:  “Come on – you can tell me! It’s not like I’m going anywhere!”

“I need to report what happened,” Jax finally answered.

“What, Casidine didn’t give you a cell phone?! What did you do – go over your family-plan minutes?”

With a low growl, Jax pulled Joe out of the elevator once they reached their floor. He led him to an empty room, where a phone sat on the floor.

“Hey, can we call for pizza?” asked Joe with a smile. He was going to turn around and face Jax when he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head. Suddenly the floor was zooming up into his face…before the darkness came.

Ezra Collig stood by the burning trash can warming his hands. To any onlooker he appeared to be another bum trying to stay warm. He had spotted Jared Casidine and his henchman when they drove up.  Casidine was speaking to his man when he reached in his pocket and took out his cell. Ezra watched as he spoke on the phone and then slammed it shut. The two men got back into the car and sped away.

‘Interesting’, thought the police chief as he took out his cell phone.

“Fenton, seems there’s been a change in plans.”

After Callie read off the address that was painted on the now closed flower shop window, Frank and company arrived within five minutes. Con had Frank park the van a few blocks away. The older Hardy boy agreed with him, this way they could surprise Casidine’s man if he was still there.

When she saw her handsome boyfriend walking down the sidewalk, Callie let out a sigh of relief and ran over to him. Holding each other tightly, Frank was happy to have Callie back in his arms. Now to get the other person he cared about.

“How did you get away?” asked Con, once Frank let go of Callie.

“Jax – that’s the name of the goon holding Joe. He hit Joe while he was still tied to the chair – hit him so hard that he fell to the floor…..” Noticing how Frank tensed up, Callie immediately soothed the older Hardy brother. ”He wasn’t hurt!” she said quickly.

“When he fell, part of the chair broke and Joe managed to get his hand loose and untied himself. Then he untied me – he used a card to get us out of the room we were locked in. After that we found his cell phone and went out a window but Jax found out we escaped.”

“You said Joe boxed you in – he hid you and let himself get caught, right?” Frank stared intently at Callie; she gave him a small nod.

“Callie, do you think you could find the building you were held in?” asked Con.

“I – I think so.”

Joe let out a low moan as he slowly regained consciousness.  He tried to move and found that he couldn’t. He blinked a few times before opening his eyes. Joe found that he was lying on his side, bound and gagged on the cold, hard floor. He tried to look around, and winced as he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head. The young teen noticed that he was in a small room; he thought that it could be a storage closet.

The faint sounds of footsteps caused him to become more alert.

Jax walked into the room, and glanced over at the storage closet. He went to check on the young teen. Giving Joe a cursory once-over, Jax turned on his heel and walked back to the phone.

After capturing the younger Hardy and enduring Joe’s smart-aleck comments, Jax needed some time to calm down.  Once he led the teen into the room, he struck him with his gun. He bound and gagged Joe and then went to have a smoke to calm his nerves. When he was finished he came back to make his call to Casidine. Little did Jax know that his delay was about to land him in jail.

Walking down the sidewalk with Frank, Con and their friends, Callie was able to locate the building she and Joe had escaped from.
