CHAPTER 18

“Watch your head.”  Joe felt a hand on his arm and another on his head helping to guide him out of the van.

Once outside, the man kept a hand on his elbow, effectively steering him in the right direction.  Joe felt the ground beneath his feet change a few times, from hard cement, to gravel to grass and back to cement.  He then heard the warning, “Three steps up.”

Again the man guided him effortlessly, making sure he didn’t trip or run into anything.  Joe heard a door open and once more felt the terrain change and knew he was now inside a building.

“Turn left, two steps down.”

Finally coming to a stop, Joe could sense there were several people in the room.  Seconds later the blindfold was removed and Joe blinked rapidly, squinting until his eyes adjusted to the light.  When he was able to focus, Joe wasn’t sure if he was relieved or worried.

Frank was standing several yards away, studying a set of plans laid out on a table in front of him.  Just behind Frank, and to his left, was a very large man holding a top of the line automatic weapon.

Frank gave Joe a quick once-over, obviously thankful to see him unhurt, and then turned on another man standing at the end of the table. “Untie him!” Frank growled.

The man nodded and Joe’s hands were untied.  The second he was free he rushed to Frank’s side. “You okay?” he asked, worriedly.

“I’m fine.  You?” Frank replied, eyeing Joe more critically now.

“Yeah…Frank, what the hell is going on?” Joe hissed, looking around the room.  Aside from the three men who had abducted Joe, there were five other men positioned around the room, two of which were guarding the front door.

“Would you like to tell him, Frank, or should I?”  Joe spun around and looked at the man whose voice he recognized from the phone calls, and then back at his brother who was glaring daggers.

“He delivered everything you wanted.  Now let him go,” Frank demanded.

The man shook his head.  “You know we can’t do that, Frank.  He’s our insurance.  As long as we have him, you’ll do what we ask.”

“And what is that exactly?”  Joe interrupted.  It was obvious to him that Frank already knew what these people wanted, leaving Joe the only one still in the dark.

Frank continued to glare at the man for a moment, but then his entire demeanor changed.  His voice quiet and his eyes downcast, he responded, “They want me to build a bomb.”

Joe paled visibly. “W-what?”  he asked, hoarsely.

“It’s a little more than that,” the man smiled.  He stepped forward and leaned against the table facing the Hardys.  “Your brother has agreed to build a bomb – two bombs, actually – with the materials you so kindly delivered to us.  He is then going to detonate the bomb at a location which I will disclose to him later.”

Joe gaped at the man.  The matter of fact way the man had spoken, as if Frank had actually agreed to assist him, momentarily stunned Joe.  Surprise quickly gave way to anger. “The hell he will!”  he snarled, knowing Frank would never agree to do such a thing.

“Oh, but he’s already given us his word, haven’t you Frank?” The man smiled at the elder Hardy.

Joe turned to his brother, expecting Frank to be just as angry as he was and got the shock of his life.  Rather than anger, rage or even annoyance at the confident way the man spoke, Frank looked…defeated. “Frank, I know you didn’t agree to build a bomb, let alone detonate one.”

Joe felt his stomach turn to ice as Frank wouldn’t even make eye contact with him.  Reaching out Joe touched his arm, tugging gently until Frank looked at him, and that’s when Joe knew they were in serious trouble.

Frank stared at him, despondent.  “If I don’t do what they want,” he whispered, “they’ll kill you.”
